President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote

Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, will retire as Chairman of Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc on June 16, 2025. After two decades of visionary leadership, he leaves behind a thriving company that dominates Nigeria’s sugar market. His departure marks the end of an era defined by remarkable growth and innovation.

On Wednesday, the company’s secretary, Temitope Hassan, confirmed the news in an official statement. The document praised Dangote’s strategic guidance, which propelled the refinery to industry leadership. Under his watch, the company expanded aggressively while maintaining strong corporate governance standards.

A key achievement was his Backward Integration Projects, launched across several Nigerian states. These initiatives significantly boosted local sugar production, cutting reliance on imports. Consequently, they aligned with federal policies promoting self-sufficiency in critical commodities.

To ensure a smooth transition, the Board has named Arnold Ekpe as the new Chairman. Ekpe, a seasoned banker and former Ecobank CEO, brings decades of executive expertise. His appointment signals a fresh chapter focused on sustained growth and market adaptation.

In their statement, the Board thanked Dangote for his exceptional service and welcomed Ekpe’s leadership. They expressed optimism about the refinery’s future, emphasizing its solid foundation. This handover represents a pivotal moment for the company as it navigates evolving industry challenges.

Dangote’s legacy remains intact, with the refinery positioned as a national powerhouse. Meanwhile, Ekpe’s takeover offers new opportunities for innovation and expansion. Stakeholders eagerly await the next phase of growth under his stewardship.

The transition reflects a well-structured succession plan, ensuring stability and continuity. As Dangote steps back, his impact endures, while Ekpe’s leadership promises renewed momentum. The sugar industry will undoubtedly watch this evolution closely.
