Super Eagles Star Visits Enugu, Gets Warm State Welcome

Governor Peter Mbah has appointed Super Eagles goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, as an official ambassador of Enugu State.

The announcement came during Okoye’s visit to the Lion Building on Tuesday, where he met with Governor Mbah.

Mbah said Okoye’s sporting achievements and dedication to youth development earned him the honour.

He noted that Okoye represents excellence on both national and global stages.

The governor praised the 25-year-old for choosing to invest in the future of young people.

During their meeting, Okoye shared plans to launch a charitable foundation in Enugu.

He also revealed plans to establish a football academy to nurture talented youths in the region.

Governor Mbah pledged land for the academy and endorsed the project with excitement.

He invited Okoye to join the next Enugu International Marathon featuring elite runners worldwide.

Mbah described Okoye as a proud son of Enugu who is committed to giving back.

He stated that the goalkeeper will inspire students in the state’s Smart Green Schools.

“Our youths need role models, and Okoye stands tall as one,” Mbah told the press.

He emphasised the role of youth in driving Enugu’s development and transformation.

Mbah said with patriotic citizens like Okoye, the state’s dreams are achievable.

Okoye Promises to Inspire Young Stars Through Sports

Okoye expressed deep gratitude for the governor’s warm reception and the ambassadorial honour.

He described the experience as a “memorable homecoming filled with hope and purpose.”

“I feel delighted to be welcomed home by the governor of Enugu State,” Okoye said.

He commended Governor Mbah for supporting youth and investing in Enugu’s economic progress.

Okoye pledged to work with the government in building dreams through sports and mentorship.

He emphasised that his proposed academy would transform talents into professionals and leaders.

Born in Germany to a Nigerian father, Okoye has earned 16 caps for Nigeria’s national team.

He returned to the squad after a six-month break for a friendly match in Moscow.

The goalkeeper played 25 Serie A matches for Udinese in the 2024/25 season.

He kept four clean sheets, averaged 7.3 ball recoveries, and completed 76% of his passes.

Despite one error leading to a goal, Okoye remained solid throughout the season.

He finished with over 91% pass accuracy in his own half and commanded the box well.

Enugu residents hailed the governor’s move and praised Okoye’s commitment to youth empowerment.
