Just in: Court Grants Kogi Senator Natasha Bail on Defamation Charges

A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail on self-recognition to embattled Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who is facing fresh charges brought by the Federal Government over alleged defamation.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District, appeared in court on Monday for her second arraignment.

She was accompanied by her husband, Emmanuel Uduaghan, human rights activist Aisha Yesufu, and several loyal supporters.

The latest charges stem from alleged comments made during an April 3, 2025 appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today and at a political rally in Kogi State.

In both instances, the senator claimed there was an active plot to assassinate her, allegedly orchestrated by high-profile politicians.

The Federal Government has filed a six-count charge against her, accusing her of falsely implicating Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello in the purported plot.

According to the charge sheet, Akpoti-Uduaghan claimed both men were present at a meeting where her assassination was allegedly discussed and approved.

The prosecution contends these claims amount to defamation under Section 24(2)(c) of the Cybercrime Act, as they could harm the reputations of the named political figures.

Akpoti-Uduaghan pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Her legal counsel, Prof. Roland Otaru (SAN), informed the court that she is not a flight risk and that she had earlier received bail on similar charges at the Abuja High Court.

He emphasized her standing as a public servant representing five Local Government Areas.

The presiding judge, Justice Mohammed Umar, ruled that the offences were bailable and granted her release on self-recognition, acknowledging her status as a sitting senator.

The case was adjourned to September 22, 2025, for further hearing.
