Veteran Nollywood actor Bob-Manuel Udokwu has opened up on the financial realities of the Nigerian film industry, while reflecting on the late John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu.
Speaking in a recent interview, Udokwu stated that life is generally more financially demanding for men, particularly within the entertainment industry where actors often shoulder numerous responsibilities.
“Life is generally easier for females than it is for males. It’s not that Nollywood doesn’t pay, but actors have a lot of bills to settle,” he said.
The actor expressed sadness over the circumstances surrounding Mr Ibu’s illness before his passing, recalling the public reaction during efforts to raise funds for his medical treatment.
“It pained me when John Okafor fell ill before he eventually passed away. While we were trying to raise funds for his treatment, some people on social media kept asking, ‘Where is all the money he made from acting?’ They didn’t understand the realities of the profession,” Udokwu added.
He noted that many people often assume actors earn vast and consistent income, without considering the financial pressures and obligations that come with the career.
Udokwu also revealed that he was unaware of certain aspects of Mr Ibu’s personal life at the time, including his family structure.
His remarks have sparked conversations about financial literacy, welfare structures for entertainers, and the need for better support systems within Nollywood.
The late Mr Ibu remains one of Nigeria’s most beloved comic actors, remembered for his immense contribution to the growth of the film industry and his unforgettable roles on screen.
