Tension in LP: Abure-Led Faction Gives Peter Obi 48-Hour Ultimatum

The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Peter Obi, demanding he officially resigns from the party following his participation in a newly formed opposition coalition.
Obi, who was the LP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, was among the key figures who on Wednesday, July 2, aligned with other political heavyweights to adopt the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the platform for contesting the 2027 general election.
The coalition’s stated aim is to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Thursday in Abuja, Obiora Ifoh, National Publicity Secretary of the Abure-led LP faction, accused Obi and other coalition members of engaging in deceptive political behaviour and working against the party’s ideals.
“Labour Party is not available for people with dual agenda, people with deceptive persona,” Ifoh declared.
“We will not tolerate individuals who claim to belong to the party by day and dine with the coalition at night.”
Party: Obi Must Choose—LP or Coalition
The party leadership made it clear that any LP member who has joined the coalition must formally resign within 48 hours or face disciplinary action.
Ifoh alleged that Obi has been secretly lobbying party members to join him in the new coalition, but many have refused to defect.
“We are aware of several nocturnal meetings between Peter Obi and some of our members, lobbying them to join him in his new party,” Ifoh said.
“Labour Party has consistently said it is not part of the coalition.”
‘New Nigeria’ Not Achievable With ‘Recycled Politicians’ — LP
The LP also took a swipe at the makeup of the coalition, describing its members as “recycled and desperate politicians” who had contributed to Nigeria’s current challenges.
“The so-called new Nigeria being promised by this coalition is nothing but a ruse,” Ifoh added.
“These are the same people who have mismanaged this country for years. They are power mongers, not reformers.”
He insisted that the dreams of young Nigerians yearning for change cannot be achieved through an alliance made up of “opportunistic politicians looking to relaunch themselves into relevance.”
LP Reaffirms Independence, Urges Loyalty
Reaffirming the Labour Party’s position, Ifoh said the party remains the only genuine platform for progressive change in Nigeria.
“Nearly 70 percent of Nigeria’s population is made up of young people. They are tired of gerontocrats and the old political order,” he said.
“The new Nigeria can only be achieved through the Labour Party, and we are ready to lead Nigerians along that trajectory.”
He called on all loyal members of the party to remain committed and resist what he described as distractions aimed at destabilising the party structure ahead of the 2027 elections.
