JUST IN: Former Equatorial Guinea Official in Sex Tape Scandal Faces 18-Year in Jail

Equatorial Guinea’s former top anti-corruption official, Baltasar Engonga, is facing the possibility of spending the next 18 years behind bars, as his corruption trial intensifies in Malabo.
But it’s not just the financial charges turning heads it’s the explosive sex tape scandal involving some of the most powerful families in the country that has left the nation stunned.
Engonga, once hailed as a crusader against financial crime while heading the country’s National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), was arrested in September 2024 as part of a sweeping probe into the alleged looting of public funds.
He has been held at Black Beach Prison, a facility notorious for its harsh conditions, ever since.
Shocking Discovery: 400+ Explicit Tapes Found
During a surprise raid on his residence and office by investigators from the same anti-corruption unit he once led, authorities uncovered over 400 explicit video recordings.
According to court documents, the videos, stored on compact discs and hard drives, depict Engonga engaging in intimate acts with numerous women including wives of serving government ministers, the sister of President Teodoro Obiang, and even the wife of the national police chief.
The videos, many of which are now circulating online, were reportedly filmed over several years and, in most cases, appear to have been recorded with consent.
Some footage was allegedly captured inside government offices, further inflaming public outrage and fueling claims of gross abuse of power.
At Monday’s hearing, prosecutors painted a damning portrait of Engonga as the mastermind of a sophisticated scheme to embezzle public funds and manipulate financial systems for personal gain.
They allege that during his time as Director General of Insurance and Reinsurance (2015–2020), Engonga oversaw the diversion of large sums of state money into private accounts and shell companies.
The national prosecutor is requesting:
- 8 years for misappropriation of public funds
- 4 years and 5 months for illicit enrichment
- 6 years and 1 month for abuse of office
- A fine of 910 million CFA francs (approx. $1.5 million)
- And a lifetime ban from public service
The scandal has sent shockwaves through Equatorial Guinea’s political establishment. Engonga is not standing trial alone three other former senior officials, Carmelo Julio Matogo Ndong, Ireneo Mangue Monsuy Afana, and Florentina Iganga Iñandji, are also in the dock, accused of participating in what prosecutors call a “coordinated corruption ring.”
Sources close to the presidency say the leaked videos have not only embarrassed the administration but have also strained internal alliances.
The revelations have reignited debates about moral rot within the elite and the apparent impunity enjoyed by senior officials.
As the trial enters its second day, Engonga’s defense team is preparing to challenge the charges.
They claim that their client is being scapegoated and suggest that the investigation itself may have been politically motivated, designed to silence powerful figures who may have fallen out of favor.
Still, for many citizens, the focus remains on the sheer audacity of the scandal.
“This case isn’t just about stolen money. It’s about trust how someone at the heart of our anti-corruption fight became the symbol of state rot,” said a university lecturer in Malabo who requested anonymity.
With the trial expected to continue throughout the week, public interest is likely to grow, especially as more damning details emerge.
If convicted on all counts, Baltasar Engonga could become one of the highest-ranking former officials in Equatorial Guinea to be jailed in modern history.
