Former All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, has joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a party backing an opposition coalition against President Bola Tinubu.

This significant move comes ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Oyegun’s decision to leave the APC is seen as a major boost to the ADC’s plan to become a significant force in the upcoming elections.

Sources close to him suggest that Oyegun believes the APC has lost its moral compass, prompting him to seek a new platform that aligns with his values.

He expressed his resolve to “rescue Nigeria” and promote unity, competence, and responsible leadership ¹.

The ADC-backed coalition includes prominent figures such as: Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President.

Peter Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate

Aminu Tambuwal, former Sokoto State Governor, Nasir El-Rufaii, former Kaduna State Governor.

Rotimi Amaechi, former Rivers State Governor and David Mark, former Senate President.

This coalition aims to challenge President Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, citing failures in democracy, economy, national unity, and security under his administration.

Oyegun’s exit from the APC is perceived as a symbolic and strategic blow, given his influential role in the party’s formation and success.

His defection may encourage other dissatisfied APC members to follow suit, potentially weakening the party’s position ahead of the 2027 elections.

The APC has dismissed the opposition coalition as “dead on arrival,” expressing confidence in President Tinubu’s re-election prospects.

In contrast, civil society groups have praised Oyegun’s decision, urging other elder statesmen to support credible alternatives to the status quo.

The formation of this coalition and Oyegun’s defection signal a shifting political landscape in Nigeria.

As the 2027 elections approach, the opposition coalition is likely to intensify its efforts to present a strong challenge to the ruling APC.

With key figures like Oyegun, Atiku, and Peter Obi on board, the coalition may pose a significant threat to President Tinubu’s re-election bid .
