Coalition: Aisha Yesufu Breaks Silence on Who Should Choose the 2027 Candidate

Prominent activist Aisha Yesufu has insisted that Nigerians not politicians must choose who becomes the coalition’s presidential candidate in 2027.

Yesufu made the statement amid growing debate over the likely flagbearer for the opposition-backed African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition.

In a post on her official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Yesufu wrote:

“The people must be the decider of who becomes the coalition candidate and not the politicians.”

Her post came after political observers raised concerns about elite interference in the coalition’s presidential ticket selection.

Many Nigerians welcomed her remarks and emphasized the importance of allowing grassroots supporters to influence the coalition’s direction.

Several users responded online, calling for Peter Obi to emerge as the consensus candidate for the upcoming 2027 elections.

One user, Chuks, commented: “Peter Obi or nothing. They better reach this agreement now. If not, men mount ooo.”

Another, Kawu Garba, added: “It is either Peter Obi or nothing. Don’t let corrupt elites hijack this movement and dump the people.”

Anthony Abakporo also weighed in, warning: “If Atiku repeats PDP’s mistake, ‘delegates’ will destroy this coalition. He should push for Obi now.”

The comments reflect mounting pressure on opposition figures to unite early behind a strong, widely accepted presidential candidate.

Yesufu, known for her outspokenness during the EndSARS protests, has consistently pushed for people-driven democratic reform in Nigeria.

She previously argued that Nigeria’s failure stems from low-quality candidates and voter indifference to good governance.

Her latest statement comes as the ADC continues to attract high-profile support from Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, and others.

With 2027 fast approaching, talks of a unified opposition front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have intensified.

Observers say public pressure may influence coalition leaders to adopt an inclusive, transparent candidate selection process.

Supporters of Peter Obi remain vocal online, urging party leaders to prioritize public interest over political compromise.
