Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with his military leaders

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has accused Israel of launching its recent airstrikes with the intention of toppling the Islamic Republic’s government.

In a statement published Wednesday on his official X  formerly Twitter platform, Khamenei said the strikes were not just military actions but part of a broader regime-change agenda.

“The calculation and plan of the aggressors was to weaken the system by targeting certain figures and sensitive centres in Iran,” Khamenei said.

He alleged that Israel’s aim was to destabilize the country by provoking public outrage and chaos.

“The move was meant to stir unrest and bring people into the streets to overthrow the system,” he added.

The unprecedented 12-day war, which erupted on June 13, was triggered by Israeli airstrikes that reportedly killed top Iranian military commanders and nuclear scientists.

Iranian officials claimed that over 1,000 people died as a result of the attacks.

In retaliation, Iran launched drone and missile attacks, killing 28 people in Israel, according to Israeli sources.

Tensions escalated further on June 22, when the United States bombed Iran’s nuclear facilities in Fordo, Isfahan, and Natanz marking an escalation not seen since the height of the nuclear standoff.

The timing of the attacks was especially significant. They occurred just two days before a scheduled round of nuclear talks between Iran and the U.S., which began on April 12.

Since then, those talks have been suspended indefinitely.

Despite the conflict, Tehran insists it remains open to diplomacy, but only if the U.S. offers guarantees that it will not pursue military action against Iran.

Meanwhile, Iran’s parliament on Wednesday rejected any new negotiations unless certain “preconditions” are met though it did not specify what those conditions are.

Khamenei ended his statement by urging both Iranian diplomats and the military to proceed with “care and precision”, signaling a cautious but defiant stance in the face of growing international pressure
