A shocking incident unfolded in the Ayobo-Ipaja area of Lagos State as police arrested a man identified as Amos Daniel, also known as “Gambit,” for allegedly killing his girlfriend inside a hotel room during what is believed to be a money ritual attempt.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the incident occurred on the evening of Thursday, July 17, 2025, when Daniel checked into a hotel with two other male companions around 5 p.m.

The deceased lady, later identified as Endurance from Akwa Ibom State, joined them sometime after.

Eyewitnesses say that by 10 p.m., strange and loud noises were heard emanating from their room, which alarmed neighboring guests and hotel staff. One of the guests, Adio, who was lodged next door, told Punch that the sounds raised suspicions and led him to alert a security official.

According to Adio, the hotel management attempted to reach the occupants of the room by knocking, but received no response.

When they used a spare key to enter, they discovered the lifeless body of the woman drenched in blood with multiple stab wounds.

Panic swept through the hotel as other guests called for help.

By that time, two of the three men had already fled. However, hotel staff spotted Daniel trying to escape through the gate and managed to apprehend him.

An anonymous hotel employee said they began searching the entire premises immediately after discovering the corpse.

During the search, Daniel was found hiding near the gate and was quickly overpowered.

In a shocking twist, Daniel reportedly confessed to the crime during an angry mob’s beating, claiming that he and his two friends planned the killing for ritual purposes.

Lagos State Police spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident and said the hotel manager had reported the crime to Ayobo Police Station.

According to Hundeyin, the complainant heard loud noises around 8 p.m. while fuelling the hotel generator and soon discovered the victim’s blood-soaked body.

Preliminary investigations led to the recovery of disturbing items from the suspect’s belongings, including a dagger suspected to have been used in the killing, along with a UTC axe, machete, cutlass, jack knives, laptop, jungle boots, a large pair of scissors, and ritual paraphernalia like a local sponge.

The police confirmed that the victim’s body has been deposited at Mainland General Hospital, Yaba mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

Hundeyin added that both the suspect and the case file, alongside all recovered exhibits, have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yaba, for further investigation.

The incident has sparked outrage and renewed concerns over ritual-related killings in Nigeria, particularly those targeting women.

Meanwhile, human rights groups and residents of the Ayobo-Ipaja axis have called on the police to intensify efforts to arrest the two other accomplices who are still on the run.

Ritual killings remain a grim reality in Nigeria, often linked to superstitions and criminal syndicates preying on vulnerable individuals.

This incident adds to the growing number of gruesome deaths connected to the desperate quest for wealth through diabolic means.
