17 US Service Members Killed in Iran Despite No Ground Invasion

The death toll among United States forces in the Iran war has climbed to 17, highlighting the growing risks faced by American troops deployed across the Middle East, even without a large-scale ground invasion.

The U.S. military confirmed on Sunday that another American service member was killed during operations linked to the conflict, which erupted after peace talks collapsed and fighting between the United States and Iran intensified.

The fatalities underscore how modern warfare, dominated by drones, missiles and airstrikes, continues to expose military personnel stationed across the region to deadly attacks.

President Donald Trump has defended the military campaign, arguing it is necessary to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

The first American casualties came shortly after the war began on February 28, when an Iranian drone strike hit a civilian port facility in Kuwait, killing six U.S. soldiers from an Iowa-based supply and logistics unit.

A seventh soldier later died from wounds sustained during an Iranian attack on Saudi Arabia’s Prince Sultan Air Base on March 1.

Later that month, six more service members were killed when a KC-135 refuelling aircraft supporting U.S. operations crashed in Iraq following an unspecified incident involving another aircraft.

Earlier in July, a U.S. Navy pilot also died after a helicopter crashed into the Arabian Sea during what the military described as an emergency landing unrelated to hostile fire. Three other crew members survived.

The latest wave of casualties followed Iranian missile and drone attacks on U.S. positions in Jordan and Iraq.

Two American service members were killed while defending against Iranian ballistic missiles and drones in Jordan, while another remains unaccounted for as military investigators examine unidentified remains recovered after the attack.

The most recent death occurred in northern Iraq, where a U.S. service member was killed during the controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance recovered from a downed Iranian drone. Another soldier was treated for minor injuries.

The Pentagon said the identities of the fallen troops would not be released until their families had been notified.

The conflict has also inflicted heavy losses beyond the U.S. military.

Iranian authorities say at least 50 people have been killed and more than 500 injured in U.S. strikes over the past three weeks, including eight people killed in an attack on a bridge.

The wider conflict has also claimed the lives of civilian maritime workers, foreign labourers and others across Gulf states, Israel and Lebanon as hostilities continue to spread across the region.
