JUST IN: Super falcons beat Morocco 3–2 in WAFCON thriller

Nigeria’s Super Falcons pulled off a remarkable second-half comeback to defeat Morocco 3–2 in the final of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Saturday.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the Falcons, who trailed by two goals in the first half, showed grit, composure, and fighting spirit to overturn the deficit and secure a dramatic victory in what will be remembered as one of the most exciting finals in the tournament’s history.

Morocco opened scoring in the 12th minute when Ghizlane Chebbak capitalized on a defensive lapse and fired past the Nigerian goalkeeper with a brilliant strike.

Sanaâ Mssoudy doubled the lead for the Atlas Lionesses in the 24th minute, sending shockwaves through the Nigerian bench and putting Morocco in control of the game.

The Super Falcons struggled to find their rhythm in the first half and looked disjointed across the pitch.

However, after the break, the team emerged transformed, pressing higher up the field and pushing for a response.

In the 64th minute, Nigeria was awarded a penalty after a handball was spotted inside the Moroccan box.

Esther Okoronkwo stepped up and confidently converted the spot kick to reduce the deficit to 2–1.

Seven minutes later, Folashade Florence Ijamilusi brought the Falcons level with a composed finish that sent Nigerian fans into a frenzy.

The momentum shifted decisively in Nigeria’s favour as they mounted wave after wave of attack.

In the 88th minute, Jennifer Echegini etched her name into history by scoring the winning goal.

Her late strike sealed the Falcons’ dramatic comeback and crowned them champions of Africa once again.

Statistically, Nigeria edged Morocco in key areas.

The Super Falcons recorded 14 total shots, five of which were on target.

They controlled 55% of possession and completed 280 passes at a 69% accuracy rate.

The team also earned five corner kicks compared to Morocco’s three.

Despite the intensity of the contest, the game was played with remarkable sportsmanship.

No yellow or red cards were issued by the referee.

Nigeria committed seven fouls, while Morocco committed twelve.

The victory adds another chapter to the Super Falcons’ rich legacy as the most successful team in African women’s football.

Fans, players, and officials celebrated the triumph as a symbol of resilience and national pride.

With this win, Nigeria once again affirmed its dominance in the women’s game across the continent.
