Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has alleged that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is planning to freeze all the state government’s bank accounts ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
The allegation was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi.
According to Adeleke, the anti-graft agency is also planning to freeze the personal accounts of some top government officials.
The governor described the alleged move as unlawful, saying it was aimed at disrupting government activities just days before the governorship poll.
He said if the report is true, it would amount to “the height of lawlessness” and an attempt to cripple the operations of the state government ahead of the election.
Adeleke insisted there is no legal basis for freezing the state’s accounts, arguing that the EFCC has no constitutional powers to take such action against a state government.
As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC had not responded publicly to the governor’s claims.
