Ovie Omo-Agege, former deputy Senate President has dumped the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) after losing the party primary in Delta State.
Omo-Agege announced his departure in a statement dated May 22, 2026, issued through his spokesman, Sunday Areh.
He said extensive consultations with political allies and supporters convinced him that his future, and the interests of his constituents, would be better represented outside the ruling party.
In his resignation letter addressed to the APC chairman of Orogun Ward 2 in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, Omo-Agege said he could no longer remain in a party where he believed he lacked the space to pursue the interests of his people.
“I will not remain a sitting duck in a party where I cannot advance the interests of Delta Central, Delta State and Nigeria,” he stated.
He thanked the APC for the opportunities it gave him to serve in various leadership positions during his time in the party.
Meanwhile, Omo-Agege lost the APC Delta Central senatorial primary to Senator Ede Dafinone.
He polled 3,643 votes in the primary held on May 17, while Dafinone scored 116,252 votes to secure the APC ticket for a second term.
Diaspora Digital Media understand that the former lawmaker is set to announce his membership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as there is so much pressure on him to abandon the APC after his primary defeat.
Days ago, an NDC chieftain in the state, Chief James Onosakponome, urged him to defect to the party and contest the 2027 governorship election instead of returning to the Senate.
Onosakponome argued that going back to the Senate would amount to a “political demotion” for a former deputy senate president and insisted Omo-Agege still controls a strong support base across Delta State.
