Super Eagles midfielder Alhassan Yusuf produced the standout performance of his Major League Soccer career after scoring a remarkable hat trick to inspire New England Revolution to a convincing 3–0 victory over D.C. United in Washington.

The Nigerian midfielder found the net three times as New England ended a two match winless run, delivering a performance that will rank among the most memorable individual displays of his career. More importantly, Yusuf was quick to shift the spotlight away from himself, insisting that his goals were the product of collective preparation and teamwork.

Yusuf’s treble was particularly significant because he became the first New England Revolution player to score a regular season hat trick since Kei Kamara achieved the feat in September 2017. He also became only the eighth player in the club’s history to score three goals in a regular season MLS match.

For a player whose reputation has traditionally been built around defensive discipline, ball recovery and hard work in midfield, the performance represented a major attacking milestone.

Speaking after the match, Yusuf explained that the goals were not simply the result of individual brilliance. According to the Nigerian, the team had been practising the movements and attacking situations that eventually produced the goals.

The 26 year old said the team had worked on the patterns from the beginning of the season and that he was able to benefit by finding himself in the right positions at the right time.

His comments reflected the personality that has characterised his career. Rather than focusing on his personal achievement, Yusuf credited the entire team for the victory and praised the collective performance.

The result was especially important for New England after the club had gone two matches without a win. Yusuf’s three goals ensured that the Revolution returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion.

The hat trick also moved his personal tally to five goals for the season, surpassing his previous best of three goals in a campaign. That earlier record came during the 2021/22 season when he was playing for Belgian club Royal Antwerp.

Yusuf’s latest achievement is another indication of how his game has developed since leaving Nigeria for European football.

Born in Nigeria, the midfielder began building his professional career at FC Hearts before moving to Sweden, where he played for IFK Göteborg. His performances eventually attracted attention from Belgian side Royal Antwerp, where he developed into an important midfield player and gained valuable experience in European competition.

His time in Belgium proved crucial to his development. Yusuf became recognised for his energy, tackling ability, tactical awareness and willingness to cover large areas of the pitch. Although goals were not the primary responsibility of his position, his latest MLS performance shows that he possesses more attacking quality than his traditional role might suggest.

Yusuf also earned international recognition with Nigeria and became part of the Super Eagles setup. His performances at club level helped him establish himself as a player capable of competing at a high level, while his versatility made him useful in different midfield roles.

His move to Major League Soccer has now provided another platform to showcase those qualities.

Since arriving at New England Revolution, Yusuf has been expected to provide energy and balance in midfield. However, his hat trick against D.C. United demonstrated that he can also make decisive contributions in the final third when given the opportunity.

The timing of his performance could hardly have been better.

With five goals already this season, Yusuf has established a new personal scoring benchmark and will now have the opportunity to build on it during the remaining matches of the campaign.

The achievement could also increase his importance to the Nigerian national team. Nigeria have consistently looked for midfielders who can combine defensive responsibility with the ability to contribute in attack, and Yusuf’s recent form gives Super Eagles supporters another reason to pay attention to his progress in America.

What makes the performance even more impressive is that Yusuf did not appear overwhelmed by the occasion. His three goals came as part of a disciplined team display that saw New England control the match and leave Washington with all three points.

For the midfielder, however, the message remains simple.

The hat trick may carry his name in the record books, but he believes the foundation was laid by everyone at the club.

That attitude could be just as valuable as the goals themselves.

Yusuf now has a new personal scoring record, a place in New England Revolution history and growing confidence in front of goal. After years of being valued primarily for the less glamorous aspects of midfield play, the Nigerian has shown that he can also produce moments of attacking brilliance.

His next challenge will be to prove that this was not simply a one night performance.

If Yusuf can maintain this level of confidence and continue contributing goals alongside his usual defensive work, the Nigerian midfielder could finish the MLS season with numbers far beyond anything he has previously achieved.

For now, though, the night belongs to Alhassan Yusuf.

Three goals, three points and a place in New England Revolution history have given the Super Eagles midfielder one of the biggest individual moments of his career.

And true to his character, he insists the achievement belongs to the team.
