Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has received another major international recognition after being ranked ninth among the world’s best centre forwards in ESPN’s latest FC 100 rankings.
The Nigerian forward’s inclusion is a reflection of the consistency and quality he has displayed for both club and country, particularly during his recent spell with Galatasaray. ESPN’s assessment highlights Osimhen’s remarkable ability to consistently create scoring opportunities and remain a dangerous presence in the penalty area.
At 27, Osimhen continues to occupy an important position among the elite strikers in world football. His ranking is particularly notable because the list features some of the biggest names in the modern game, including Harry Kane, Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé, Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez.
ESPN’s latest assessment places Osimhen ninth, with Hugo Ekitike completing the top 10. Kane leads the centre forward rankings, followed by other established stars, underlining the level of competition Osimhen is facing for recognition as one of the world’s best number nines.
For Osimhen, the recognition comes after another productive season in which he continued to demonstrate why he is regarded as one of the most feared forwards in European football.
His 2025/26 Champions League campaign was particularly impressive. The Nigerian scored seven goals in the competition, his highest tally in a single Champions League season. His performances helped Galatasaray compete strongly against some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including memorable victories over Liverpool and Juventus.
ESPN’s analysis also points to one of the qualities that separates Osimhen from many other strikers: his ability to repeatedly manufacture high quality shooting opportunities.
His game is built around a combination of pace, strength, movement and anticipation. Osimhen can stretch defensive lines with his speed, attack crosses aggressively and exploit even small gaps between defenders. His physical presence also makes him difficult to contain when he gets into the penalty area.
Those qualities have made him a particularly valuable asset for Galatasaray.
Osimhen’s journey to the top of world football has been far from straightforward. The Lagos born striker emerged from the Ultimate Strikers Academy before making his international breakthrough at the 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup in Chile. He became the tournament’s outstanding attacking player, scoring a record 10 goals as Nigeria lifted the trophy.
That performance announced his arrival on the international stage and eventually led to a move to Europe.
Osimhen began his European career with German club Wolfsburg before developing further in Belgium with Charleroi and later establishing himself in France with Lille. His performances at Lille earned him a major transfer to Napoli in 2020.
It was in Italy that he developed into a genuine world class striker.
At Napoli, Osimhen became the focal point of the attack and played a crucial role in the club’s historic 2022/23 Serie A title triumph. He scored 26 league goals that season, becoming the first African player to finish as Serie A’s leading scorer.
His performances earned him widespread individual recognition and established him as one of Europe’s most sought after forwards.
After leaving Napoli, Osimhen moved to Galatasaray, where he quickly became a fan favourite. His goals, intensity and connection with supporters have made him one of the most important figures at the Turkish club.
The ESPN ranking therefore represents another significant achievement in a career that has already produced several remarkable milestones.
There is also an interesting element to Osimhen’s ranking when compared with some other established names. Robert Lewandowski and Cristiano Ronaldo, two of the greatest goalscorers of their generation, are positioned outside ESPN’s top 10 centre forwards in the latest assessment.
That does not diminish their extraordinary careers, but it demonstrates how rapidly the hierarchy of elite strikers is changing.
Osimhen is now firmly part of that new generation.
His ranking also comes at an important point in his career, with his future continuing to attract interest from major European clubs. His performances for Galatasaray have ensured that he remains one of the most closely watched strikers in the transfer market.
For Nigeria, his continued rise is equally important.
The Super Eagles have long depended on prolific forwards to lead their attack, and Osimhen has gradually established himself as one of the country’s most important modern strikers. His pace, aggression and finishing ability give Nigeria a different dimension whenever he leads the line.
Being ranked ninth by ESPN may not satisfy everyone who believes Osimhen deserves an even higher position. Nevertheless, the recognition confirms something that has become increasingly difficult to dispute: the Nigerian remains firmly among the world’s elite centre forwards.
At a time when football is producing an impressive collection of attacking talents, Osimhen continues to stand out through his relentless movement, physical power and ability to turn limited opportunities into dangerous chances.
For a striker who rose from the streets of Lagos to become a Serie A champion, Champions League scorer and Super Eagles star, another appearance among the world’s best is yet another milestone in an extraordinary football story.
And with Osimhen still in his prime, there could be plenty more to come.
