New Carlo Ancelotti has admitted he is fully aware of the criticism he could face after omitting Brazilian forward João Pedro from Brazil’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite the striker’s impressive performances at club level this season.

The experienced Italian coach made the emotional admission while discussing the difficult decisions behind his final squad selection for the tournament, acknowledging that João Pedro was one of several players unfortunate to miss out on representing Brazil on football’s biggest stage.

Ancelotti, who recently took charge of the Brazil national football team after leaving Real Madrid CF, explained that selecting the final squad was one of the toughest moments of his managerial career because of the abundance of attacking talent available to the five time world champions.

Speaking during a media briefing after the squad announcement, the former AC Milan and Chelsea FC manager admitted that João Pedro’s exclusion was painful, especially considering the outstanding campaign the young Brazilian enjoyed in European football this season.

According to Ancelotti, the striker probably deserved a place in the squad based on merit and recent performances, but he insisted the final decision was influenced by tactical balance and competition for attacking positions.

The omission has already sparked widespread debate among Brazilian football supporters and pundits, many of whom believe João Pedro did enough to secure a World Cup call up.

The 24 year old forward enjoyed one of the finest seasons of his career after emerging as one of Chelsea’s most influential attacking players. João Pedro scored important goals, delivered crucial assists and consistently impressed with his creativity, movement and work rate throughout the campaign.

His performances earned praise from supporters and football analysts across England, with many considering him one of the standout Brazilian players in Europe this season.

Several reports in England also claimed that João Pedro was named Chelsea’s Player of the Season after his remarkable consistency and attacking contributions helped the club compete strongly in domestic and European competitions.

Because of that form, many fans expected the striker to be rewarded with a place in Brazil’s World Cup squad.

Social media platforms were flooded with reactions shortly after the official announcement, with some supporters describing João Pedro as one of the biggest omissions from the Seleção squad.

Others questioned whether Brazil’s coaching staff had overlooked current form in favour of more established names and experienced internationals.

Ancelotti, however, defended his decision by explaining that Brazil possesses extraordinary depth in attacking areas. The Italian tactician selected several established stars alongside emerging talents as he attempts to build a balanced squad capable of competing for the World Cup title.

Among the attacking players included in the squad are Vinícius Júnior, Raphinha, Endrick and returning superstar Neymar, whose comeback has generated excitement among Brazilian supporters.

Football analysts believe Ancelotti’s preference for experience and tactical flexibility may have influenced the final decision. Some observers also argued that João Pedro’s versatility may not have been enough to displace more established names in Brazil’s already crowded attacking department.

The situation reportedly became even more emotional after Brazilian media revealed that João Pedro’s family gathered together to watch the official squad announcement, expecting to celebrate his inclusion before eventually learning he had been left out.

Despite the disappointment, the forward reacted professionally and respectfully. According to reports, João Pedro accepted the coach’s decision and vowed to continue working hard to earn future opportunities with the national team.

Football commentators have praised the striker’s maturity following the setback, noting that many players struggle emotionally after missing out on a World Cup opportunity.

For Ancelotti, the controversy represents one of his first major challenges since becoming Brazil coach. Expectations surrounding the Italian manager remain extremely high because of his legendary status in club football and his history of success across Europe.

The Brazilian Football Confederation appointed Ancelotti with the hope that his experience and tactical expertise can help restore Brazil’s dominance in international football after years of disappointment in major tournaments.

The coach is now expected to lead Brazil into the World Cup with enormous pressure from supporters demanding a sixth global title.

Meanwhile, many football observers believe João Pedro’s omission could ultimately motivate the striker to improve even further. The Brazilian forward has steadily progressed throughout his European career, beginning with Fluminense FC before later impressing at Watford FC and Brighton & Hove Albion FC.

His continued development at Chelsea has strengthened belief that he still has a bright future with the Brazilian national team.

As Brazil prepare for the World Cup, attention will remain focused on whether Ancelotti’s controversial squad decisions can deliver success on football’s biggest stage while omitted stars like João Pedro continue fighting for future opportunities with the Seleção.
