Tension has gripped the University of Ibadan community following the reported abduction of a 300-level law student, identified simply as Tomisin.
The Students’ Union Government (SUG) confirmed the development in a statement issued by its president, Comrade Temidayo Adeboye, assuring students that efforts were underway to secure her safe return.
According to the union, Tomisin travelled on a religious retreat alongside the National General Director of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship, Engr. Uwem Cosmos, and eight other participants.
Tomisin serves as the National Secretary of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship, Nigeria, and is also the Vice-President of the Scripture Union chapter at the University of Ibadan.
The union dismissed reports circulating on social media that eight University of Ibadan students were missing, clarifying that Tomisin is the only student of the institution currently unaccounted for.
Adeboye said the union had begun engaging relevant stakeholders to establish the facts surrounding the incident and had already contacted religious organisations and security agencies to support efforts aimed at locating her.
Reports indicate that Tomisin was returning from the Scripture Union National Conference held at the Camp of Faith in Okigwe, Imo State, when communication with her was lost.
Concern over her whereabouts deepened after she failed to sit for her facult examinations on both Monday and Tuesday.
Sources also disclosed that another University of Ibadan student from the Department of Music, who attended the same conference, returned safely. However, the vehicle conveying the General Director of the fellowship reportedly remains missing.
Confirming the incident, the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Ademola Lewis, said the university was aware of the situation, although management had not been informed about the trip before it took place.
He added that efforts were ongoing to ensure the student’s safe return and urged members of the university community to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could complicate rescue efforts.
