Bandits’ attack leads to drowning of 20 villagers in Zamfara

Over 20 people died in the Kali community of Gumi Local Government Area, Zamfara State, while trying to escape a bandit attack on August 4, 2024.

Daily Post reported that a resident who wished to remain anonymous reported that the bandits attacked the village at 1:00pm.

“The bandits were seen moving towards Kalli village on motorcycles with sophisticated weapons to attack the community, which forced the villagers to flee for their safety,” he added.

He stated that the residents attempted to flee the bandits by crossing the river.

However, the overloaded boat capsized in the Birnin Magaji River, resulting in the deaths of 20 villagers.

Five corpses were recovered from Falale River, four from Birnin Magaji River, and three from Gadar Gummi River.

He added that the bandits terrorized the communities of Kwammaka, Kwammaka Jibi, Kwammaka Mai Katsina, Kallin, and Kazura villages, all within Gummi Local Government Area.

The police have not yet issued a statement regarding the reported incident.

Notable instances of bandit invasions in Zamfara State

Zamfara State, located in the northwestern part of Nigeria, is predominantly rural with agriculture as the mainstay of its economy.

The state has been plagued by banditry, kidnapping, and cattle rustling, severely affecting the safety and livelihood of its inhabitants.

Here are some notable instances of village invasions in Zamfara State:

Kadawa Village Attack: Kadawa village in Zurmi Local Government Area lost over 50 people when a large group of bandits armed with advanced weapons stormed the village in January 2022.

They shot indiscriminately, killing residents and burning down houses.

Dangulbi Village Massacre: Dangulbi village in Maru Local Government Area lost at least 30 people to bandits in June 2018.

The bandits invaded the village on motorcycles, opening fire on residents and causing chaos. They also looted properties and set several houses ablaze.

Tungar Kafau and Gidan Wawa Villages Attack: Tungar Kafau and Gidan Wawa villages in Anka Local Government Area lost over 80 people to bandits in April 2021.

The attack was simultaneous on both villages.

The bandits arrived on motorcycles, surrounded the villages, and began shooting. Many residents died while trying to flee.

Gummi and Zurmi Local Government Areas Raid: Multiple villages in Gummi and Zurmi LGAs lost at least 60 people to bandits in April 2022.

The Bandits conducted coordinated raids on several villages, killing residents, stealing livestock, and burning down houses.

The attackers used extreme violence and brutality.

Kurkuru and Rafin Gero Villages Attack: Kurkuru and Rafin Gero villages in Bakura Local Government Area lost over 20 people to bandits in October 2020.

The bandits attacked the villages at night, catching residents off guard.

They shot at anyone they encountered, looted properties, and set houses on fire.
