Barcelona have reportedly put their pursuit of Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez on hold after the Spanish club rejected a €100 million offer for the Argentina international, forcing the Catalan giants to accelerate their search for an alternative striker before the summer transfer window closes.
The decision represents a significant setback for Barcelona, who had identified Alvarez as their preferred candidate to strengthen the attack following the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres. The club had hoped the 26 year old forward could become the focal point of a new attacking era at Camp Nou, but Atletico Madrid’s refusal to negotiate has made a deal increasingly difficult.
Atletico’s position has remained firm despite Alvarez reportedly being open to the possibility of leaving the Madrid club. The Spanish side rejected Barcelona’s €100 million proposal earlier in the summer and have shown little indication that they are prepared to change their stance before the transfer deadline.
Barcelona have now accepted that signing Alvarez this month is highly unlikely unless there is a dramatic change in circumstances. While the Catalan club have not completely closed the door on a future move for the Argentine, sporting director Deco has begun examining other options that could strengthen Hansi Flick’s squad.
The urgency surrounding the search is largely connected to Lewandowski’s departure. The Poland international had been Barcelona’s primary central striker and a prolific source of goals since joining the club. Replacing his experience, physical presence and finishing ability is now one of the biggest challenges facing the club’s sporting department.
Flick has made it clear that he would like Barcelona to bring in a recognised central striker before the transfer window closes. The German manager believes an additional attacking option would provide greater balance and flexibility as the club prepares for another demanding campaign in LaLiga and European competition.
Speaking about the situation, Flick acknowledged that Barcelona are still working to find the right player.
“We’re looking for that player and Deco is doing a great job,” Flick said, according to ESPN.
Deco also admitted that replacing Lewandowski will be considerably more complicated than replacing Ferran Torres.
“Replacing Robert is much more difficult. It’s really tough to replace a player like him,” the Barcelona sporting director explained.
The comments underline the scale of the problem facing Barcelona. The club have already added several attacking players, including Karim Adeyemi and Anthony Gordon, while Raphinha and teenage sensation Lamine Yamal remain important components of Flick’s attacking plans. However, none of them naturally fits the traditional number nine role occupied by Lewandowski.
Barcelona could therefore be forced to rely on tactical flexibility if they fail to complete another signing.
Flick has several options available to him. Raphinha, Adeyemi, Gordon and Yamal could potentially operate through the middle, while Fermin Lopez and Dani Olmo can be used in false nine roles. Such an approach would give Barcelona greater movement in attack, although it could also leave the squad without a proven elite goalscorer capable of consistently leading the line.
The most intriguing internal option is 18 year old Egypt international Hamza Abdelkarim.
The teenager has impressed during pre season and recently scored against Al Ahly in the Joan Gamper Trophy, taking his pre season tally to four goals. His performances have attracted praise from Flick, who highlighted his ability to attack crosses and hold up the ball.
“Hamza is a good forward,” Flick said. “We can see that with how he attacks crosses. Today I also saw him keep the ball well, which is good.”
Despite Abdelkarim’s promising development, Barcelona are unlikely to place the entire responsibility for replacing Lewandowski on a player with limited senior experience. The club are therefore continuing to investigate the transfer market.
Several alternatives have already emerged.
Barcelona previously explored moves for Joao Pedro and Junior Kroupi, but neither deal materialised. Other high profile names, including Lautaro Martinez, Luis Suarez and Benjamin Sesko, have reportedly been considered financially unrealistic for the Catalan club.
Attention has now shifted towards Villarreal forwards Georges Mikautadze and Ayoze Perez. Barcelona’s recruitment team is understood to be particularly impressed by Mikautadze’s performances and statistical data, making the Georgia international one of the more realistic options under consideration.
However, the final priority appears to be finding an attacking player capable of filling the void left by Lewandowski.
For Barcelona, the Alvarez situation demonstrates just how difficult the current transfer market can be. Atletico Madrid’s financial strength and determination to retain their star striker have prevented the Catalan giants from simply buying their preferred target.
With the transfer deadline approaching, Deco now faces a race against time. Barcelona must decide whether to make another major investment in a striker, pursue a cheaper alternative or trust Flick’s tactical system and the club’s emerging young players.
The decision could have major consequences for Barcelona’s season. With LaLiga competition expected to be fierce and Champions League ambitions remaining high, the club cannot afford to enter the campaign without a reliable source of goals.
For now, Julian Alvarez appears set to remain at Atletico Madrid, while Barcelona continue their search for the next striker capable of carrying the attacking responsibility at Camp Nou.
