Super Eagles defender Benjamin Tanimu has firmly dismissed speculation linking him with a return to the Nigeria Premier Football League, declaring that his immediate ambition is to continue his professional career abroad after parting ways with Moroccan top-flight side Maghreb de Fès.

The Nigerian centre back believes his journey in international football is far from over and remains determined to establish himself in one of the world’s competitive leagues despite recent challenges in North Africa.

Tanimu’s comments come amid growing speculation over his future following his departure from Maghreb de Fès. While several football observers suggested that a return to the NPFL could help him regain momentum, the 23-year-old defender insists that such a move is not under consideration, stressing that he still has the quality and determination to succeed outside Nigeria.

Speaking about his future, the Super Eagles star acknowledged that the past year had presented several challenges but insisted those experiences have made him mentally stronger and more determined to reach greater heights.

According to Tanimu, his focus is now on securing a new club overseas where he can continue developing, compete at a high level and strengthen his chances of becoming a regular member of Nigeria’s senior national team.

The defender explained that while he respects the NPFL and appreciates the role it played in his career, returning to the domestic league at this stage would not align with his long-term ambitions.

His confidence reflects the steady rise of a player who has built his career through discipline, resilience and consistent performances.

Born in Benin City, Edo State, Benjamin Tanimu developed a passion for football from an early age. Like many Nigerian footballers, he honed his skills on community football pitches before joining organised youth football, where his composure and defensive intelligence quickly distinguished him from his peers.

His professional breakthrough came with Bendel Insurance, one of Nigeria’s oldest and most respected football clubs. After earning promotion to the senior team, Tanimu rapidly established himself as one of the Nigeria Premier Football League’s most dependable defenders.

His performances were characterised by calmness under pressure, excellent positioning, strong aerial ability and an impressive ability to play out from the back.

Standing at approximately 1.85 metres, Tanimu combines physical strength with athleticism, making him effective in both defensive duels and attacking set pieces.

His consistency played an important role in Bendel Insurance’s resurgence in Nigerian football, helping the club regain its status among the country’s top teams.

As his performances improved, national team selectors took notice.

Tanimu received his first invitation to the Super Eagles after impressing in the NPFL, marking a significant milestone in his career. Making his senior international debut fulfilled a lifelong dream and rewarded years of hard work and perseverance.

Although competing alongside experienced defenders presented a major challenge, Tanimu adapted quickly to the demands of international football.

He further enhanced his reputation during Nigeria’s participation in the Unity Cup and several international friendly matches, where he delivered composed and mature performances against quality opposition.

His ability to read the game, intercept passes and organise the defensive line earned praise from coaches, teammates and football analysts.

Many observers believe Tanimu represents the future of Nigeria’s central defence because of his tactical awareness, confidence on the ball and willingness to learn.

His impressive performances eventually opened the door to European and North African football.

Seeking greater challenges, the defender secured a move to Moroccan club Maghreb de Fès, hoping to continue his development in one of Africa’s most competitive leagues.

Although his spell in Morocco was shorter than expected, the experience provided valuable lessons both professionally and personally.

Playing in a different football culture exposed him to new tactical systems, increased competition and a faster style of play, all of which contributed to his overall growth as a footballer.

Despite leaving the club earlier than anticipated, Tanimu remains grateful for the opportunity and believes the experience has prepared him for the next chapter of his career.

Off the pitch, the Super Eagles defender has earned a reputation for humility, professionalism and discipline.

Former coaches frequently describe him as one of the hardest-working players in training, always eager to improve every aspect of his game.

His commitment to fitness and continuous learning has helped him overcome numerous obstacles throughout his football journey.

Unlike many modern defenders who rely primarily on physicality, Tanimu combines strength with intelligence. He is comfortable carrying the ball out of defence, initiating attacks with accurate long passes and maintaining composure under intense pressure.

These qualities have made him an attractive option for clubs seeking defenders capable of adapting to modern tactical systems.

Football experts believe Tanimu’s age, international experience and technical qualities make him an appealing signing for clubs searching for reliable central defenders with significant room for development.

For the Super Eagles, Tanimu remains one of Nigeria’s brightest defensive prospects.

Competition for places in the national team continues to increase, but his determination to play regularly at club level abroad could significantly strengthen his chances of becoming a consistent starter for Nigeria in future Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and FIFA World Cup qualification campaigns.

As he prepares for the next phase of his career, Benjamin Tanimu remains focused on training, maintaining peak fitness and waiting for the right opportunity.

His journey from grassroots football in Benin City to representing Nigeria on the international stage serves as an inspiration to countless young footballers who dream of wearing the green and white jersey.

Whether his next destination is Europe, North Africa or another competitive league, one thing remains clear. Benjamin Tanimu has no intention of slowing down. Instead, the Super Eagles defender is determined to continue chasing his dream of becoming one of Africa’s finest centre backs while proudly representing Nigeria on the global stage.
