Boko Haram Attack on Nigerian Army Base in Borno Leaves Eight Soldiers Dead in Early Morning Assault

A deadly attack by suspected Boko Haram insurgents has left at least eight Nigerian soldiers dead following a violent raid on a military base along the Mandara–Buratai Road in Borno State. The assault, which occurred in the early hours of Friday, is part of a renewed wave of insecurity targeting military formations in Nigeria’s North East region.

Security sources confirmed that the attackers stormed the 162 Battalion position under the cover of heavy rainfall at approximately 4:00 a.m., taking advantage of reduced visibility and challenging weather conditions to overwhelm parts of the facility. The incident reportedly resulted in significant casualties among troops stationed at the base.

According to military personnel familiar with the situation, the attackers launched a coordinated offensive that forced soldiers into defensive positions before breaching sections of the base. Initial reports indicate that at least eight soldiers were killed during the confrontation, while several others sustained injuries of varying severity.

A source at the location described the intensity of the attack, stating that the insurgents struck unexpectedly during rainfall, creating confusion and limiting the immediate response capacity of troops. The source confirmed that the unit was caught in a difficult operational situation as the attackers pressed their assault.

Additional military accounts suggest that the attackers briefly overran parts of the installation before withdrawing after causing extensive damage and casualties. Some reports also indicated that the assailants carried out brutal acts during the raid, although official confirmation of these claims has not yet been issued by military authorities.

Following the incident, reinforcement units were reportedly deployed to the area to secure the base, support surviving personnel, and begin a full assessment of the damage. Military officials are also working to account for all personnel and determine the final casualty figures as operations continue in the affected region.

The Nigerian Army has yet to release a formal statement on the attack at the time of filing this report. However, security sources confirm that investigations have commenced and that operational reviews are underway to understand how the insurgents were able to penetrate the defensive perimeter.

The attack highlights the continuing threat posed by Boko Haram and its splinter faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province, both of which have intensified assaults on military and civilian targets in the North East despite ongoing counterinsurgency operations by Nigerian security forces.

Borno State remains one of the epicenters of the long-running insurgency that has displaced millions and claimed thousands of lives over more than a decade. Military formations in the region have frequently come under attack, particularly in remote areas where terrain and weather conditions often hinder rapid reinforcement and surveillance.

Security analysts note that insurgent groups have increasingly adopted ambush-style tactics, targeting isolated bases during periods of low visibility or adverse weather. These tactics are designed to exploit gaps in surveillance and response times, particularly in rural and forested operational zones.

The latest assault adds to growing concerns about the resilience of insurgent networks in the region, even as the military continues sustained operations aimed at degrading their capabilities. Despite repeated offensives and territorial losses suffered by the groups in recent years, sporadic but deadly attacks continue to challenge security stability in the North East.

Eyewitness accounts and early field reports also indicate that the attackers moved in large numbers, suggesting a coordinated operation rather than a spontaneous raid. Military sources further stated that efforts are ongoing to track the movement of the insurgents following the attack.

Authorities have intensified security patrols in surrounding communities and along major access routes to prevent further incursions. Air and ground surveillance operations are also expected to be reinforced as part of broader efforts to stabilize the area.

The incident has once again drawn attention to the risks faced by frontline troops stationed in volatile regions, where unpredictable attacks continue to place significant pressure on military resources and personnel.

As of press time, the full extent of the damage and the final casualty count remain under review. Officials are expected to provide a comprehensive briefing once operational assessments are completed.

The attack serves as a stark reminder of the persistent security challenges in Nigeria’s North East, where Boko Haram and ISWAP factions continue to pose a serious threat to both military installations and civilian populations.
