The Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM) is set to hold a major press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, May 6, 2025.

According to Diaspora Digital Media (DDM), this notice was disclosed in an official invitation sent out to journalists and media houses across the country by the COPDEM National Media Team on Monday.

The conference will take place at the ADC National Party Office located at 2 Oyo Street, opposite Dannic Hotels, in Area 2, Abuja.

The event is scheduled to commence at 10:00 AM and will feature key national figures from the coalition.

COPDEM has stated that the event will focus on pressing national concerns, especially those affecting Nigeria’s fragile democratic institutions.

The coalition emphasized the importance of media participation, noting that public awareness and engagement are vital in a democratic society.

COPDEM was formed in the wake of growing concerns about democratic backsliding, authoritarian practices, and human rights violations across Nigeria.

The group comprises civil society organizations, political actors, and pro-democracy activists united by a shared mission to defend democratic values.

COPDEM rose to prominence in 2023 after widespread protests against alleged electoral irregularities during the general elections.

The coalition has since been vocal about issues including voter suppression, judicial compromise, and the misuse of state institutions.

Through nationwide rallies, legal interventions, and media campaigns, COPDEM has consistently drawn attention to what it describes as threats to Nigeria’s democratic survival.

In a country where military rule and political instability have shaped much of its post-independence history, democracy remains a fragile construct.

Nigeria returned to civilian rule in 1999, but challenges such as electoral fraud, corruption, and executive overreach continue to test the resilience of its democratic framework.

COPDEM says its objective is to ensure the entrenchment of transparency, accountability, and participatory governance at all levels of leadership.

Tuesday’s press conference, according to organizers, will feature critical statements from leading voices within the coalition.

They are expected to address recent national developments, including ongoing political tensions, security concerns, and citizen disenfranchisement.

The event will also provide a platform for journalists to pose questions directly to the coalition’s leaders.

This dialogue is aimed at fostering mutual understanding between pro-democracy stakeholders and the Nigerian public.

Media coverage of the event is being encouraged, as COPDEM believes that information dissemination plays a key role in strengthening democratic norms.

The coalition’s Media Team has urged all invited journalists to confirm their attendance ahead of the conference.

Inquiries and confirmations can be made via phone at +234-7040668516 or email at info@copdem.org.

The group maintains an online presence through its official website: www.copdem.org.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) will provide full coverage of the event as part of its commitment to reporting issues that affect governance and civic responsibility.

DDM, a UK-based organization operating in Awka, Anambra State, has consistently amplified voices advocating for justice, transparency, and democratic progress in Nigeria.

Observers note that this press conference may serve as a crucial turning point in the ongoing pushback against perceived democratic erosion.

As Nigeria navigates complex governance challenges, the role of watchdog groups like COPDEM continues to grow in relevance.

Political analysts believe that such public engagements help bridge the gap between political leadership and citizen concerns.

It remains to be seen how government institutions and political stakeholders will respond to the coalition’s latest positions.

Nonetheless, many Nigerians are looking forward to Tuesday’s event as a potential catalyst for renewed democratic dialogue.

COPDEM’s bold stance on key issues has earned both praise and criticism from various quarters.

Despite opposition, the coalition insists it will not relent in its mission to protect the democratic space for future generations.

With rising public dissatisfaction over governance, the coming days may reveal how much traction COPDEM’s message gains nationwide.
