BREAKING: Fear Engulfs Oyo Community as Parents Rush to Evacuate Children From School Over Rumoured Bandit Invasion

Tension and panic spread across a community in Oyo State on Tuesday after frightened parents stormed a primary school and hurriedly withdrew their children following rumours of a suspected bandit attack around nearby settlements.

The dramatic incident reportedly occurred at Ijeru Baptist Basic School I and III after information circulated within the area alleging that armed bandits had invaded communities around the Ajawa axis of the state.

Witnesses said the atmosphere around the school quickly turned chaotic as worried parents and guardians rushed into the premises in large numbers, desperate to secure the safety of their children amid growing fears of insecurity.

Videos and photographs that surfaced online showed emotionally charged scenes as parents forced open school gates and entered classrooms to remove pupils while teachers and school officials attempted to restore calm.

Residents familiar with the incident disclosed that the panic began after rumours spread across surrounding communities claiming that suspected armed men had been sighted in nearby locations. Although the reports were not officially confirmed, the information reportedly triggered fear among residents already traumatised by recent kidnapping incidents in parts of Oyo State.

A community source explained that many parents acted immediately after hearing the reports because they feared the possibility of another attack targeting schools in the region.

“The parents became terrified after hearing stories that bandits had entered communities around Ajawa. Many of them rushed to the school and started taking their children away without waiting for confirmation,” the source said.

According to eyewitnesses, school authorities attempted to reassure parents that there was no verified security breach within the community or around the school environment.

Teachers were said to have contacted security operatives and local police officers to verify the reports as panic continued to spread among residents.

Another source familiar with the situation revealed that security officials informed the school management that the disturbance being discussed was linked to a clash involving farmers and Fulani herders rather than a coordinated bandit invasion.

“The teachers informed the parents that the police authorities had clarified the issue. They explained that what happened was related to a dispute between farmers and Fulani groups within the area and not an attack by bandits,” the source stated.

Despite repeated assurances from teachers and local authorities, many parents reportedly refused to take chances and continued removing their children from classrooms.

The incident disrupted academic activities within the school as several pupils were withdrawn before the end of the school day. Some parents were seen carrying younger children while others hurriedly escorted pupils away from the premises amid confusion and emotional tension.

Residents said the panic reflected the growing fear that has gripped many communities across Oyo State following recent attacks and abductions linked to criminal gangs operating in rural areas.

Security concerns in the state intensified after gunmen recently attacked schools in the Oriire Local Government Area, abducting pupils, students, teachers, and school administrators.

Among those kidnapped during the attack was the principal of Community High School, Ahoro-Esiele, Mrs. Rachael Alamu, alongside several members of staff and students.

The incident sparked outrage across the state and renewed concerns over the vulnerability of schools located in remote communities where security presence remains limited.

The situation became even more disturbing after reports emerged that one of the abducted teachers, Michael Oyedokun, had allegedly been killed by his captors.

According to reports, a disturbing video believed to have been released by the kidnappers showed the teacher restrained while pleading before he was reportedly executed. The development further heightened fear among residents and parents who now worry about the safety of children attending schools in isolated communities.

Community leaders and residents say the circulation of videos involving kidnapped victims has worsened public anxiety and contributed to the rapid spread of fear whenever rumours of attacks surface.

Some parents who spoke anonymously said they no longer feel confident about the security situation in rural schools and would rather keep their children at home than expose them to danger.

A resident noted that the psychological impact of repeated kidnapping incidents has left many communities living in constant fear.

“People are already traumatised because of recent attacks and kidnappings. Anytime rumours spread, everybody panics immediately because nobody wants to lose a child,” the resident explained.

The latest development has once again highlighted growing concerns about insecurity affecting educational institutions across parts of Nigeria.

Observers have called on security agencies to strengthen surveillance around schools and improve emergency response systems to prevent fear and misinformation from escalating into public disorder.

Community leaders have also urged residents to avoid spreading unverified reports capable of creating panic while encouraging authorities to provide timely information during security situations.

Meanwhile, parents and residents continue to demand stronger protection for schools and communities as concerns mount over recurring attacks, kidnappings, and rising insecurity in parts of Oyo State.
