The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has taken a major administrative step in Nigeria’s preparations for the 2027 general elections by uploading the name of Peter Obi as the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) on its official candidate nomination portal. The development marks a significant milestone for the party as it intensifies efforts to conclude its nomination process and strengthen its participation in the forthcoming electoral contest.
The latest development comes amid ongoing legal proceedings involving the party, but despite the court-related challenges, the NDC has expressed confidence that its electoral activities remain on course. According to information released by the party’s National Leader, the successful upload of Peter Obi’s details onto the INEC portal demonstrates that the party continues to enjoy access to the commission’s nomination platform in accordance with the established electoral timetable.
DDM News gathered that alongside the confirmation of Peter Obi’s nomination, the party has also taken important legal steps to protect its interests by filing an appeal against a recent court judgment. In addition to the appeal, the NDC has submitted an application for a stay of execution, seeking to preserve the status quo while the appellate court considers the substantive issues arising from the earlier ruling.
The party disclosed that copies of both the appeal and the application for stay of execution have already been duly served on the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission and the commission itself, ensuring that all relevant authorities are fully informed of the ongoing judicial process. Party officials maintain that these legal actions are intended to safeguard the rights of the political party while allowing the electoral process to continue without unnecessary disruption.
According to the statement issued by the party leadership, INEC subsequently granted the NDC access to its online nomination portal, enabling the party to commence the official upload of candidates’ names for various elective positions as stipulated under the commission’s electoral guidelines.
The National Leader revealed that the first phase of the exercise had already been successfully completed with the submission of his own details as well as those of Peter Obi as the party’s presidential candidate. He further explained that the nomination of the vice-presidential candidate would follow immediately after the completion of the remaining statutory documentation and deposition required by the commission.
The party noted that the upload process is not limited to the presidential ticket alone but extends to candidates contesting various elective offices across the federation. Work, according to party officials, is progressing simultaneously to ensure that all qualified candidates are uploaded within the timelines provided by the electoral commission.
The NDC reiterated that it remains a duly registered political party recognized under Nigerian law and therefore retains every constitutional and statutory right to participate fully in the nation’s democratic process. Party leaders emphasized that all mandatory procedures required by the electoral commission had been complied with, including the conduct of party primary elections under the observation and monitoring of INEC officials.
According to the party, the process of selecting candidates for presidential, legislative, governorship, and state assembly elections has already been substantially concluded. What remains, the leadership explained, is the administrative exercise of transmitting candidates’ particulars to the electoral commission through the designated electronic portal before the expiration of the stipulated deadlines.
The NDC further reminded its members that INEC’s electoral timetable provides sufficient time to complete the remaining submissions. Under the commission’s schedule, the party has until July 11 to upload the names of candidates contesting seats in the National Assembly, while governorship and State House of Assembly candidates are expected to be submitted no later than July 17.
Party officials therefore appealed to members, supporters, and stakeholders across the country to remain calm and avoid unnecessary anxiety over recent developments. They assured supporters that there is adequate time to complete every outstanding aspect of the nomination process and expressed confidence that the party will fully comply with every requirement laid down by the electoral commission.
DDM News understands that the leadership also addressed concerns arising from disagreements that surfaced during the conduct of the party’s primary elections. Acknowledging that internal contests naturally generate differing opinions among aspirants and their supporters, the party disclosed that reconciliation efforts have already commenced across the country to restore unity and strengthen internal cohesion ahead of the general election campaign.
According to the statement, reconciliation committees are engaging aggrieved aspirants and party stakeholders with the objective of ensuring that every member remains committed to the collective goal of building a formidable political platform capable of offering Nigerians an alternative leadership in 2027.
The NDC assured all unsuccessful aspirants that they remain valuable members of the political family and would continue to play active roles within the organization. The leadership emphasized that those who did not emerge as candidates during the primaries would be fully integrated into campaign structures, strategic committees, policy teams, grassroots mobilization efforts, and other party activities.
Party officials stressed that the strength of the NDC lies not merely in its elected candidates but also in the dedication and commitment of thousands of supporters, volunteers, coordinators, and grassroots mobilizers spread across the federation. They maintained that every member has an important contribution to make toward the party’s overall electoral success.
The statement further congratulated all candidates who emerged from the various primary elections, while also commending party faithful for their patience, discipline, and unwavering confidence throughout the nomination process. The leadership urged members to remain united as preparations intensify for nationwide campaigns expected to commence in line with the electoral timetable.
Beyond its internal affairs, the party reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Nigeria’s multi-party democratic system. It emphasized that political pluralism remains essential for democratic growth and called on all institutions involved in the electoral process to discharge their constitutional responsibilities with fairness, professionalism, and impartiality.
The NDC also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission for what it described as its professionalism in administering the party’s registration and nomination processes. The party encouraged INEC to continue upholding transparency and neutrality as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
Similarly, the leadership appealed to the judiciary to ensure that all pending legal matters relating to the party are determined strictly in accordance with the provisions of the law, while urging security agencies to remain impartial in safeguarding democratic institutions and guaranteeing a peaceful political environment.
Expressing optimism about the future, the NDC stated that it has full confidence in the nation’s legal institutions and believes that the pending appeal and all related applications before the courts will receive fair and objective consideration. The party concluded by reaffirming its readiness to participate fully in the 2027 general elections and expressed confidence that all outstanding nomination processes would be completed within the timelines established by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
