Breaking news: PDP holds emergency meeting over defection crisis

The National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has begun an emergency meeting in Abuja.
The meeting is taking place at the party’s national secretariat located in Wadata Plaza, Abuja.
Sources say the session began behind closed doors on Tuesday morning.
This emergency gathering follows recent waves of defections from the opposition party.
Party insiders say the PDP has been facing internal crises and loyalty issues among key members.
Top members and political stakeholders are said to be losing confidence in the party’s leadership.
Only last week, two prominent party figures dumped the PDP for the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
Former PDP Vice Presidential candidate, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, led the list of defectors.
Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, also joined the APC in a move that shocked political watchers.
Their defection reportedly caused a total collapse of PDP’s structure in Delta State.
The Deputy Governor of Delta, Mr. Monday Onyeme, was among those who defected.
He did not move alone—state commissioners followed him to the ruling APC.
Local government chairmen and grassroots leaders also dumped the PDP en masse.
The mass defection was sealed in a closed-door meeting held in Asaba last week.
Party faithful across the state are now rethinking their political future.
PDP leadership fears a ripple effect may affect other strongholds in the South-South region.
This emergency meeting is aimed at assessing the damage and finding a solution quickly.
National Chairman of PDP, Umar Damagum, was spotted arriving at the meeting venue earlier today.
Other members of the National Working Committee were also seen entering the secretariat.
Party sources confirm the meeting will explore reconciliation and damage control measures.
The party may also consider disciplinary actions or peace talks with defected members.
As the 2027 election draws nearer, PDP is racing to regain lost grounds.
Party chieftains say silence is not an option at this critical time.
