PDP to oborevwori: Vacate office, you betrayer!
DDM News

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has demanded that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State resign immediately following his sudden defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to Diaspora digital media (DDM), this announcement has heightened political tension in Delta, one of PDP’s longstanding strongholds in the South-South region.
Oborevwori, alongside former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and other political figures, dumped the PDP last week for the ruling party.
Their defection came as a shock to many, especially considering that both men rose to power on the back of PDP structures and loyalty.
The PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC), led by Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, convened in Abuja to strategize its response.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Damagum said the party had instructed its National Legal Adviser to take immediate court action.
He emphasized that the PDP would not tolerate such “gross betrayal” from individuals who owed their political rise to the party.
Damagum said the legal move was aimed at recovering what he described as the party’s “stolen mandate” in Delta State.
In a decisive administrative step, the PDP appointed a South-South Zonal caretaker committee headed by Emma Ogidi.
This committee will take over the affairs of the party in Delta State pending the formation of a full caretaker committee.
The new team has also been mandated to take stock of all party properties and begin recovery of assets where necessary.
This directive suggests the party suspects that defectors may have taken party resources along with them.
The NWC also reviewed recommendations from the PDP Governors’ Forum on the position of the National Secretary.
It agreed that the final decision should rest with the National Executive Committee (NEC), in line with internal democratic processes.
The PDP has suffered several high-profile defections since it lost power at the federal level in 2015.
However, the recent move by Oborevwori and Okowa hits harder, given Delta’s deep-rooted history with the party.
Oborevwori, who became governor in May 2023, was widely perceived as a loyal PDP man and Okowa’s political protégé.
His defection, just a year into his tenure, is being viewed by party loyalists as treacherous and politically calculated.
Many observers see this development as a turning point that could shake the party’s control in the oil-rich Delta region.
The PDP’s swift reaction shows it is not willing to go down without a fight.
Legal analysts say the case could test Nigeria’s legal system on the validity of cross-party defections after elections.
If the courts side with the PDP, it could set a landmark precedent for political accountability in Nigeria.
The battle ahead could either reassert PDP’s strength or expose the limits of party control in a fractured political environment.
For now, all eyes are on Delta as the drama unfolds.
