Fresh political controversy has erupted within Nigeria’s main opposition platform, the Peoples Democratic Party, after a faction of the party formally declared former senator Sandy Onor as its consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.
The announcement, which was made at the party’s national secretariat at Wadata Plaza in Abuja, has intensified concerns over the worsening internal divisions threatening the stability of the PDP ahead of the next presidential election. The latest development has triggered strong reactions across Nigeria’s political landscape, with analysts warning that the multiplication of factions within opposition parties may weaken coalition negotiations and reduce the chances of presenting a united challenge in 2027.
Reports indicate that the declaration emerged during a presidential primary exercise organized by a faction loyal to party chieftain Abdulrahman Mohammed. The exercise reportedly involved the collation of results and consultations among party stakeholders across the federation before the adoption of Sandy Onor as the faction’s preferred presidential flag bearer.
Former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom, who chaired the faction’s presidential primary collation committee, stated that extensive consultations were conducted across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory before stakeholders agreed on Onor’s emergence through consensus.
According to officials aligned with the faction, delegates and party stakeholders endorsed the decision through voice affirmations during the exercise. Shortly after the declaration, Onor was reportedly presented with a certificate of return alongside the PDP flag, symbolizing his recognition as the faction’s presidential candidate for the 2027 race.
The development marks another major chapter in the prolonged leadership crisis that has continued to destabilize the PDP since it lost power to the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2015. Over the years, the opposition party has battled recurring internal conflicts involving leadership disputes, zoning disagreements, defections, parallel congresses, and legal battles over party structures.
Political observers believe the latest declaration further exposes the widening cracks within the PDP at a critical period when many Nigerians expect opposition parties to consolidate and provide a formidable alternative ahead of the next election cycle.
The emergence of Sandy Onor has also drawn fresh attention because of his perceived political closeness to Nyesom Wike, whose continued influence within the PDP has remained a controversial subject among party members.
Wike, a former governor of Rivers State and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, has repeatedly faced criticism from sections of the PDP for maintaining cordial relations with the ruling government despite remaining a member of the opposition party.
Supporters of Wike have consistently defended his political approach, arguing that governance and national development should transcend party rivalry. However, critics within the PDP insist that his political alignment with the ruling administration has contributed to distrust and deepened divisions within the opposition party.
Sandy Onor himself remains a familiar figure within Nigeria’s political environment. The former senator previously represented Cross River Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly and later emerged as the PDP governorship candidate in Cross River State. He is widely known for his strong communication style, grassroots mobilization, and active participation in opposition politics.
Before his emergence as consensus candidate, Onor had publicly declared his intention to contest for the presidency and obtained PDP nomination forms. At the time, he reportedly explained that mounting pressure from supporters, political associates, and stakeholders across the country encouraged him to join the presidential race.
The PDP’s internal crisis has continued to worsen in recent years following disagreements surrounding party conventions, judicial pronouncements, zoning arrangements, and the legitimacy of certain party organs. The existence of multiple factions laying claim to authentic leadership has raised concerns among party loyalists and political analysts alike.
Experts warn that the growing trend of factional congresses, parallel primaries, and competing leadership structures within major political parties could create serious legal complications before the 2027 elections. Some commentators also believe unresolved disputes may damage public confidence in opposition parties at a time when many Nigerians are demanding stronger political alternatives capable of addressing economic hardship and insecurity.
Nigeria is currently facing major economic and social challenges, including rising inflation, unemployment, exchange rate instability, insecurity, high food prices, and increasing living costs. These realities have intensified public interest in political developments ahead of the next general elections as citizens assess which parties and candidates possess practical solutions to the country’s growing problems.
Supporters of Sandy Onor argue that his emergence offers the PDP an opportunity to rebuild its structure and reconnect with Nigerians disappointed by years of internal conflict. Members of the faction described him as an experienced politician capable of promoting unity and restoring public confidence within the opposition camp.
Others, however, believe the continued fragmentation of the PDP could significantly weaken the party’s electoral prospects if urgent reconciliation efforts are not initiated before the official campaign season begins.
Political tension is equally rising across several opposition parties as coalition talks, defections, and presidential ambitions continue to reshape Nigeria’s political environment ahead of the 2027 contest. Analysts believe the coming months may witness fresh alliances, strategic negotiations, and dramatic political realignments involving influential politicians nationwide.
Despite uncertainties surrounding the PDP’s leadership structure, the declaration of Sandy Onor as a consensus presidential candidate has added a fresh dimension to Nigeria’s evolving political atmosphere and intensified national conversations about the future of opposition politics ahead of the 2027 elections.
