Tension erupted at the Federal High Court in Abuja as operatives of the Department of State Services forcefully took activist and politician Omoyele Sowore into custody.
The dramatic moment followed a ruling by Justice Mohammed Umar, who ordered that Sowore be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing of his application. The application challenges both the revocation of his bail and a bench warrant previously issued against him.
Eyewitness accounts and circulating video footage show heavily armed DSS operatives surrounding Sowore inside the courtroom before escorting him out as proceedings concluded. The scene reportedly caused panic and confusion, with many describing the atmosphere as chaotic.
Sowore, a former presidential candidate under the African Action Congress, has long been a controversial figure in Nigeria’s political and activist space, often drawing both support and criticism for his outspoken stance on governance and civil rights.
The incident has since sparked widespread reactions, with debates centering on the manner of his arrest, the rule of law, and the broader implications for political freedom and judicial processes in the country.
As the case continues, attention now turns to the next court hearing, where the legality of the bail revocation and bench warrant will be contested.
