Chelsea Must Pay £55m to Sign Crystal Palace Defender Maxence Lacroix

Chelsea’s plans to strengthen their defence this summer have encountered a significant obstacle after Crystal Palace placed a £55 million valuation on French international defender Maxence Lacroix.

The Blues, now under the leadership of new manager Xabi Alonso, have identified the commanding centre back as one of their priority transfer targets as they continue an ambitious squad rebuild ahead of the new Premier League season. However, Palace are determined not to lose one of their most influential players unless their asking price is met in full.

The negotiations are expected to become one of the most closely watched transfer stories of the summer, with Chelsea eager to add proven Premier League quality to a defence that is expected to undergo major changes before the transfer window closes.

Lacroix has rapidly established himself as one of England’s most reliable defenders since joining Crystal Palace from German Bundesliga side Wolfsburg two years ago.

The 26 year old has impressed with his pace, strength, aerial dominance and ability to play comfortably with the ball at his feet. His consistent performances have made him a key figure in Palace’s defensive setup and earned him regular recognition at international level with France.

According to reports, Palace remain in a strong negotiating position because Lacroix still has three years remaining on his current contract, which reportedly earns him around £60,000 per week. With no immediate pressure to sell, the South London club believe they are entitled to demand a premium fee.

Their valuation has also been influenced by the current transfer market, where several defenders have recently completed moves worth more than £50 million. Palace believe Lacroix belongs in that category and are unwilling to accept anything below their £55 million asking price.

For Chelsea, signing Lacroix would represent another major investment in a squad that has already seen significant changes under Alonso.

The club recently secured Italian defender Marco Palestra from Atalanta in a deal worth approximately £43 million, but further reinforcements remain a priority as Chelsea seek greater stability at the back following inconsistent defensive performances in recent campaigns.

To finance additional arrivals, Chelsea are also expected to reduce the size of their defensive squad.

French defender Axel Disasi is reportedly available for a permanent transfer after spending time on loan at Aston Villa and West Ham United over the past 18 months.

Academy graduate Trevoh Chalobah could also leave Stamford Bridge, with Serie A side Como understood to be monitoring his situation closely.

The possible departures would create both financial flexibility and room within the squad for another experienced central defender.

For Crystal Palace, the potential sale of Lacroix would continue a transfer strategy that has generated enormous financial returns over recent seasons.

The club has developed a reputation for identifying talented players, improving them and eventually selling them for substantial profits.

Recent high profile departures including Marc Guehi, Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze have strengthened Palace’s financial position while demonstrating the club’s ability to compete successfully in the transfer market.

Aware of growing interest in Lacroix, Palace have already started planning for every possible outcome.

The Eagles recently completed the signing of former Barcelona defender Oscar Mingueza on a free transfer, providing additional defensive depth ahead of the new season.

The club is also monitoring Augsburg centre back Chrislain Matsima as another possible reinforcement should Lacroix eventually leave Selhurst Park.

Lacroix’s football journey has been built on determination and steady development.

Born in Villeneuve Saint Georges, France, he began his youth career at several local academies before attracting attention with his athletic ability and defensive intelligence.

His breakthrough came after joining French club Sochaux, where his performances earned interest from clubs across Europe.

In 2020, German Bundesliga side Wolfsburg secured his signature, providing the young defender with an opportunity to compete at a higher level.

His time in Germany proved crucial to his development. Playing in one of Europe’s most competitive leagues allowed him to refine his tactical awareness, improve his ball distribution and develop into a modern defender capable of operating in both a back four and a back three.

Those qualities convinced Crystal Palace to bring him to the Premier League, where he adapted quickly despite the physical demands of English football.

His speed has become one of his greatest strengths, allowing him to recover possession during counterattacks while also providing confidence for teammates pushing higher up the pitch.

Comfortable in one on one situations and strong in aerial duels, Lacroix has earned praise from coaches and analysts for combining physical attributes with intelligent positioning.

International recognition soon followed as he forced his way into the French national team, where he has continued to establish himself among the country’s talented group of defenders.

He is expected to feature for France in the FIFA World Cup third place playoff against England, replacing injured Arsenal defender William Saliba in the starting lineup.

The fixture offers Lacroix another opportunity to showcase his abilities on one of football’s biggest stages while Chelsea continue monitoring his performances ahead of a possible formal offer.

Whether Palace eventually agree to sell may depend entirely on Chelsea’s willingness to match the club’s £55 million valuation.

If the move materialises, Lacroix would become another statement signing in Chelsea’s rebuilding project under Xabi Alonso while providing the London club with an experienced defender entering the prime years of his career. Meanwhile, Crystal Palace remain determined to protect one of their defensive leaders unless an offer arrives that truly reflects his importance and growing reputation in European football.
