Children’s Day Celebration Turns Chaotic in Benin as Tear Gas, Stampede Leave Students Injured

A Children’s Day celebration at the Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City ended in confusion on Wednesday after tear gas was discharged during the event, leaving several students injured and some reportedly collapsing.

The incident occurred during the gathering of schoolchildren at the stadium, where thousands had assembled to mark the annual celebration.

Witnesses said panic broke out after a yet-to-be-identified security operative allegedly fired tear gas, forcing students to flee for safety.

In the chaos that followed, some children reportedly sustained injuries, while others collapsed after inhaling the gas and were rushed to the Edo Specialist Hospital for treatment.

One student, who spoke anonymously, said at least three students collapsed after the discharge of the tear gas, while another suffered a head injury after being struck by a stone allegedly thrown during the confusion.

The Edo State Government, however, dismissed what it described as misleading accounts of the incident, insisting that reports circulating online had been exaggerated and twisted to cast the administration in a negative light.

In a statement issued by Governor Monday Okpebholo’s Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Patrick Ebojele, the government said the incident stemmed from overcrowding and unruly behaviour at one of the stadium gates due to the massive turnout of students.

According to the statement, the stadium was filled beyond expectation as children from across the state trooped in for the celebration.

“The turnout was unprecedented,” the government said, explaining that all entrances were opened to ease access into the facility.

Officials said the situation escalated when some children became disorderly at one of the gates, triggering a stampede-like situation.

In response, a bouncer reportedly deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd, leading to the panic and injuries.

The government said Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa, who attended the event, immediately coordinated emergency response efforts, helping provide first aid and ensuring injured students received treatment at the Edo Specialist Hospital before returning home to their families.

Authorities also confirmed that the bouncer involved is being questioned by the police as part of an investigation already ordered by the state government.

While describing the incident as regrettable, the government maintained that it does not diminish its commitment to child welfare and safety.

Officials further commended security personnel, medical teams and volunteers for their swift intervention, saying their response helped to contain the situation and prevent further escalation.
