Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has expressed sympathy with families of pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area, saying the state government remains committed to securing their safe return.
Makinde made the remarks on Wednesday in a message posted on his official X account as Nigeria marked both Children’s Day and Eid-el-Kabir.
The governor said the celebrations were overshadowed by the pain and uncertainty facing families whose loved ones remain in captivity, adding that his thoughts were also with security personnel working to restore calm in affected communities.
“As we mark this year’s Eid and Children’s Day, our thoughts are with every family awaiting the return of their loved ones, and with security agencies working to keep our communities safe,” he wrote.
Makinde assured residents that efforts were ongoing to secure the release of the victims abducted during the attack on schools in Oriire LGA.
“We are working to ensure the safe return of those who were kidnapped in Oriire LGA. May this holy season fill our state with peace,” the governor added.
The governor’s message comes nearly two weeks after suspected bandits attacked three schools in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15, abducting pupils and teachers.
The attack left one teacher dead during the raid, while another was later reportedly killed in captivity, intensifying concern and outrage over the incident.
Although reports suggest there have been attempts at communication between the abductors and government representatives, officials have yet to disclose details of any negotiations.
This year’s Children’s Day coincided with Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, bringing a rare overlap of festivity and reflection amid lingering security concerns in parts of the country.
