The African Democratic Congress has welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision on its leadership dispute, describing the ruling as a strong endorsement of both its leadership and the judiciary.

In a statement issued Thursday, the party’s spokesman, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the judgment confirmed the legitimacy of the party’s structure under National Chairman David Mark and National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola.

He also praised the five-member panel of the Supreme Court of Nigeria for what he called a clear and unanimous decision, adding that it reflects positively on the country’s judicial system.

Still, the party made it clear it does not see the ruling as the end of the matter.

Abdullahi said the events leading up to the judgment point to attempts to undermine opposition voices, warning that the ADC would remain alert.

“The ADC will not be intimidated, distracted, or silenced,” the statement said, urging party members and supporters to stay vigilant as the political climate begins to heat up ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Supreme Court had earlier set aside an order by the Court of Appeal in Abuja that directed parties in the dispute to maintain the status quo.

That order had prompted the Independent National Electoral Commission to withdraw recognition of the Mark-led leadership.

In its ruling, the apex court said the Appeal Court had no basis to issue such an order after already deciding on the interlocutory appeal before it.

It then directed all parties to return to the Federal High Court, where the substantive case filed by party chieftain Nafiu Gombe will now proceed.
