ABUJA, Nigeria — There are moments in the life of a nation when history demands a choice between comfort and courage, public affairs analyst Dare Ojebe has said, describing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s assumption of office in May 2023 as precisely such a crossroads moment for Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Ojebe argued that comfort whispers that difficult decisions can be postponed, while courage insists that problems deferred only become more expensive for future generations. He noted that the choice between seeking temporary relief and pursuing lasting solutions defines the trajectory of nations at critical junctures.
Ojebe observed that President Tinubu inherited a country burdened by decades of accumulated challenges, including a fragile economy, decaying infrastructure, and a security architecture stretched to its limits. He said the administration’s decision to remove fuel subsidies and unify the exchange rate were examples of courageous choices that previous governments had avoided due to political calculations.
According to Ojebe, the subsidy removal, while initially painful, was a necessary step to redirect resources from consumption to investment. He said President Tinubu’s decision to pursue bold reforms despite political opposition reflected a commitment to courage over comfort.
