Depardieu: Sexual assault allegations trial sets to begin in Paris
According to the Diaspora Digital Media (DDM), a renowned French actor, Gerard Depardieu, sets to begin his sexual allegations trial in Paris on Monday.
Depardieu is responding to two allegations of sexual misconduct, marking France’s most prominent #MeToo case to date.
The French actor is accused of committing acts of sexual misconduct against two women while filming ‘Les Volets Verts’ (‘The Green Shutters’) in 2021.
According to prosecutors, “Gerard allegedly made inappropriate sexual comments to and subsequently engaged in unwarranted physical contact with two members of the film’s production staff.”
The 75 years old has consistently denied the charges, stating in a publicly released letter that he has never engaged in harmful behavior towards any woman.
“According to Jeremie Assous, counsel for Gerard Depardieu, the actor is profoundly impacted by the allegations and due to health concerns, his medical team has advised against his attendance at the hearing.
According to report, “the trial of Gerard Depardieu represents a pivotal moment for France’s #MeToo movement, as he is the most prominent figure in French cinema to face allegations of sexual misconduct.”
Two women who have remained anonymous accused Depardieu of making inappropriate sexual remarks and engaging in unwarranted physical contact, specifically alleging violent grabbing and groping.
Depardieu’s counsel reaction
Le Monde, Depardieu’s lawyer has contested the allegations, labeling them “false accusations.”
The lawyer further alleged that one of the women is seeking financial compensation of €30,000, implying a monetary motive.
Following the emergence of the allegations, Gerard has faced significant professional and social repercussions.
His film career has been dormant since 2022, with no recent appearances.
In addition, Depardieu is scheduled to face trial next year on charges of raping actress Charlotte Arnould on two occasions at his Paris residence. He has consistently denied these allegations.
Supports
Despite the increasing allegations, a faction of France’s artistic community has publicly backed Gerard Depardieu.
In a letter published last year, a group comprising more than 50 actors, directors, and producers contended that the accusations constitute “an affront to the artistic world.”
“A letter signed by prominent figures in the French arts industry, including actors Charlotte Rampling, Carole Bouquet, and Pierre Richard, as well as singers Carla Bruni and Jacques Dutronc, expressed solidarity with Depardieu.”
The signatories stated that “they could not remain indifferent to the collective condemnation faced by Mr. Depardieu.”
French President Emmanuel Macron sparked controversy last year when he referred to actor Gerard Depardieu as “the pride of France” amidst multiple allegations of sexual assault.
Macron further stated that Depardieu was being subjected to a “manhunt,” which campaigners argue undermines efforts to protect women from violence.
Actress Léa Seydoux called Macron’s comments “crazy”, adding that it “gives a very bad image for France.”
The French Culture Minister, Rima Abdul-Malak announced plans to investigate revoking Gerard’s Legion d’Honneur award after footage surfaced of him making inappropriate sexual comments to women in a 2018 North Korea documentary.
The move came despite Macron’s public support for Depardieu, BBC reported.
Abdul-Malak, who served as Minister of Culture from May 2022 to January 2024, has been a strong advocate for women’s rights and has taken a firm stance against sexual misconduct.
