On October 15, 2024, the petrol tanker overturned and spilled fuel after the driver lost control.

The resulting fire engulfed nearby buildings and vehicles, claiming 105 lives and injuring 70 others.

The Jigawa State Police Command confirmed the toll, with DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam providing details of the incident.

“The tanker was traveling from Kano to Nguru when the driver lost control near Khadija University in Majia Town, causing it to overturn and spill fuel,” Adam said. “Unfortunately, villagers attempted to scoop petrol from the drainage, resulting in a flame that engulfed the area.”

Emergency services responded swiftly to the explosion, evacuating corpses and rushing injured persons to nearby hospitals.

The police, firefighters, and good Samaritans collaborated to extinguish the fire.

The Jigawa State Government has commenced investigations into the incident, with Governor Mohammed Badaru Abubakar visiting the scene to assess the damage.

This tragic event highlights the need for enhanced safety protocols and emergency preparedness measures to mitigate the impact of such incidents.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and regulatory agencies must ensure stricter enforcement of safety standards for tanker operations.

DDM urges the relevant authorities to conduct thorough investigations into the incident, implement measures to prevent similar tragedies, and provide adequate support to affected families.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their loved ones, and the people of Jigawa State during this difficult time.
