Nollywood actor Jide Awobona has spoken out following the backlash he received after deleting a video in which he addressed the state of insecurity in Nigeria.

Taking to social media, the actor explained that he removed the video because he felt overwhelmed and emotionally affected by the ongoing security challenges facing the country.

“Behind many smiles are pains you may never see. That is why we must be careful not to judge a book by its cover,” he wrote.

Awobona noted that his reaction stemmed from deep personal concern, adding that he has consistently used his platform to speak out against national tragedies, including the recent abduction of teachers and school pupils in Oyo State.

He also revealed that his past experience with robbery has left a lasting impact on him, making him more sensitive to issues surrounding insecurity and the fear many Nigerians live with daily.

Appealing to the public, the actor urged Nigerians to show empathy and understanding, rather than attacking one another during difficult times.

“This is not the time to attack fellow Nigerians. This is not the time to tell others how they should react to tragedy, loss, fear, or frustration,” he said.

Addressing critics who questioned his participation in the Ojude Oba cultural festival amid the nation’s challenges, Awobona explained that public figures are not immune to fear, grief, or trauma. He added that many people often rely on work and social activities as a way to cope with emotional stress.

“A lot of us have forgotten about the Chibok girls, I haven’t. I’m still traumatised, trying to distract myself with work and other activities to stay sane,” he added.

His response has sparked conversations online about mental health, empathy, and the different ways individuals process national crises, especially in a time when insecurity continues to be a major concern across the country.
