Ebonyi Diaspora Group threatens recall of Senator Nwebonyi

The Association of Ebonyi Indigenes Socio-Cultural in the Diaspora has warned Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, representing Ebonyi North Senatorial District, over his public remarks and posture in the ongoing controversy involving Nigeria’s Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
In a strongly worded statement released in Abuja, the group’s President, Paschal Oluchukwu, condemned Nwebonyi’s conduct, describing it as un-parliamentary, unwholesome, and unbecoming of a legislator by every known standard.
Oluchukwu criticized the Senator’s persistent media appearances and verbal attacks on individuals who have called for a thorough investigation into the sexual harassment allegations made by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan against the Senate President.
The group said it had initially considered ignoring the matter but felt compelled to speak out due to Nwebonyi’s continued media appearances, which, it argued, portray Ebonyians in a negative light.
The group questioned the senator’s apparent abandonment of his legislative duties, accusing him of turning himself into a bag-carrying thug for a colleague who is merely first among equals.
The group further alleged that rumors were circulating about a possible political deal involving the 2027 governorship race in Ebonyi State. According to the group, Nwebonyi is believed to have been tipped by the ruling party to replace the incumbent governor, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru—a proposition it firmly rejected.
The group concluded by calling on constituents in Ebonyi North to initiate a recall process should the senator continue on what it described as a disgraceful expedition. Enough should be enough, the statement declared.
Senator Nwebonyi has always dismissed sexual harassment allegations made by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate PresidentAkpabio, calling them “politically motivated” and an attempt to evade disciplinary action.
Nwebonyi held that Akpoti-Uduaghan has a history of making false allegations against prominent individuals, including Reno Omokri, Dino Melaye, and Yahaya Bello.

Akpoti-Uduaghan-Akpabio: Sworn enemies?
He questioned why she was appointed to a key Senate committee role if she had truly been a victim.
“If she truly believed she was being victimised because of an alleged sexual harassment incident, the proper forum to raise such a grievance would have been the Senate itself, not a television interview,” Nwebonyi said.
He urged Akpoti-Uduaghan to pursue her claims through the appropriate legal channels rather than using the Senate as a “stage for diversionary theatrics.”
Nwebonyi warned that legitimising such claims without evidence could set a dangerous precedent, where anybody could make false accusations to disrupt Senate proceedings.
“The Senate and Nigerians should not fall for this diversionary tactic. The Senate must stay focused, maintain order, and refuse to be blackmailed into legitimizing what is clearly an opportunistic falsehood,” Nwebonyi concluded.
