The Government has launched a new long-acting HIV prevention injection known as (LEN PrEP), becoming one of the pilot states selected for the programme in Nigeria.

The injectable antiretroviral drug is administered once every six months and is designed to help prevent HIV infection, particularly among people considered at substantial risk.

Speaking during the launch at General Hospital Ezzangbo in Ohaukwu Local Government Area, the Ebonyi State Commissioner for Health, , described the innovation as a major breakthrough in HIV prevention.

According to him, the twice-yearly injection offers an alternative to the daily oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medication, which many users struggle to take consistently.

“HIV remains a public health concern, especially among young people in an already vulnerable population,” Ekuma said.

He noted that challenges such as stigma and poor adherence to daily medication had continued to affect HIV prevention efforts in the state.

The commissioner clarified that Lenacapavir is not intended to replace existing prevention methods but to complement them.

“This innovation is part of comprehensive prevention strategies such as testing, condom usage, behavioural interventions and treatment services,” he explained.
