EFCC confiscates Okowa’s passport amid corruption probe

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has seized the international passport of former Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, amid ongoing investigations into alleged corruption during his tenure.

Okowa was detained by the anti-graft agency on November 4, 2024, in connection with the alleged diversion of N1.3 trillion in derivation funds from the federation account between 2015 and 2023.

According to sources within the EFCC, Okowa appeared voluntarily at the agency’s Port Harcourt office, where he was briefly held before being released on bail after meeting specified conditions, including surrendering his travel documents.

“Okowa is no longer in our custody. He was released after meeting his bail conditions, one of which was the deposit of his passport,” an EFCC source explained, noting the measure was intended to ensure compliance with the ongoing investigation.

Though, in response to the allegations, Okowa publicly denied any wrongdoing, describing the accusations as unfounded and “laughable.”

While speaking to the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU), which visited him at his residence in Asaba, Okowa expressed confidence in his integrity, asserting that the petition against him was politically motivated.

He added that the funds Delta State received during his early years in office barely covered salaries and operational expenses, much less misappropriating any substantial amounts.

The former governor also affirmed his commitment to supporting Delta’s current governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and to contributing toward the state’s ongoing development.

He thanked the UPU for its support throughout his tenure and reiterated his commitment to equity and progress within Delta State.

Meanwhile, the EFCC has called for patience as it continues its investigation, urging individuals to seek clarification directly with the commission rather than resorting to speculation or misinformation.
