ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Esports Federation of Nigeria (EFN) and the National Universities Commission (NUC) have initiated discussions on integrating esports into Nigeria’s university system as part of efforts to expand digital innovation and modern educational opportunities.

The move is expected to establish an academic framework that would support esports development within tertiary institutions across the country.

Stakeholders involved in the discussions said the initiative could create opportunities for students to develop skills in gaming, technology, digital entrepreneurship, and innovation.

Officials explained that the proposed framework would go beyond recreational gaming and focus on education, research, digital careers, and talent development.

The initiative is also expected to encourage students to explore emerging opportunities within the rapidly expanding global esports industry.

Experts say esports has evolved into a multibillion-dollar global sector involving competitive gaming, media, technology, software development, content creation, and digital marketing.

Industry analysts noted that many universities across different countries have increasingly embraced esports through specialized programmes, scholarships, and organized competitions.

Supporters of the initiative believe Nigeria could become a major player in Africa’s digital economy if young people receive proper support and training.

The EFN reportedly emphasized that integrating esports into universities could help position Nigeria as a regional leader in technology-driven innovation.

Education stakeholders also pointed out that digital industries continue creating employment opportunities beyond traditional career sectors.

Experts highlighted the growing relationship between esports and fields such as computer science, artificial intelligence, animation, software engineering, and media production.

The NUC’s involvement is viewed as significant because the commission oversees academic standards and university development policies across Nigeria.

Analysts say integrating esports into academic environments may also encourage research and investment in technology-related sectors.

Supporters argued that structured programmes could help change perceptions that gaming is merely a leisure activity.

The initiative could further promote creativity, teamwork, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills among students.

Observers noted that Nigerian youths already participate actively in gaming and digital content creation, though many lack institutional support and infrastructure.

Technology experts stressed that adequate internet access, modern facilities, and investment would be essential for successful implementation.

Educational institutions have increasingly explored digital learning methods and innovation-driven programmes in response to global technological changes.

Stakeholders believe the proposed framework could create pathways for students interested in careers within the broader digital ecosystem.

Attention now shifts to future discussions and policy decisions that may determine how esports becomes integrated into Nigeria’s university education system.
