The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, has reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to ensuring that every valid vote cast by Nigerians will count and be fully reflected in the final outcome of elections. His assurance comes amid growing public debate on electoral credibility, transparency, and the need to strengthen democratic processes ahead of future nationwide polls.

Speaking during a strategic engagement on electoral reforms and institutional strengthening, the INEC chairman emphasized that the commission is intensifying efforts to rebuild public trust in the electoral system. He noted that democracy can only thrive when citizens are confident that their votes have real impact and that the electoral process is free from manipulation, technical failure, or human interference.

Prof. Amupitan stated that INEC remains focused on improving all stages of the electoral process, including voter registration, accreditation, voting, collation, and result transmission. According to him, reforms being implemented are designed to make the system more transparent, more efficient, and more resistant to compromise. He stressed that the credibility of elections is central to national stability and democratic development.

He further explained that the commission is working to strengthen the use of technology in elections, particularly systems that support biometric voter verification and electronic result transmission. These innovations, he said, are aimed at reducing human interference and ensuring that results reflect the actual will of the people at polling units across the country.

The INEC chairman also reassured stakeholders that lessons learned from previous election cycles have been carefully studied and are being used to improve future operations. He acknowledged that concerns raised by political parties, civil society organizations, and election observers have played a significant role in shaping ongoing reforms within the commission.

According to him, INEC is not only focused on conducting elections but also on continuously improving the electoral framework to meet global best practices. He emphasized that transparency remains a guiding principle in all the commission’s activities, especially in result management and public communication during elections.

Amupitan noted that the success of any democratic election depends on the confidence of the electorate. He stated that when voters believe their participation matters, turnout increases and democratic institutions become stronger. For this reason, he said INEC is prioritizing policies that enhance trust and reduce disputes after elections.

He also highlighted the importance of collaboration with political parties, security agencies, the judiciary, and civil society groups in ensuring credible elections. According to him, no electoral body can succeed alone without the cooperation of all democratic stakeholders. He urged all actors to play their roles responsibly and avoid actions that could undermine the integrity of the process.

In addition, he reaffirmed that INEC will continue to enforce electoral guidelines strictly and ensure that officials involved in election duties are properly trained and monitored. He stressed that professionalism and accountability remain essential values for all personnel involved in election administration.

The chairman’s remarks have generated reactions among stakeholders, many of whom described the assurance as timely given the increasing expectations from Nigerians ahead of future elections. Some civil society organizations have welcomed the renewed commitment, noting that consistent reforms are necessary to strengthen confidence in the system.

Political analysts also observe that the credibility of future elections will largely depend on how effectively INEC implements its technological tools and how well it manages logistics across the country’s diverse and complex electoral landscape. Issues such as late arrival of materials, transmission delays, and result collation disputes have remained key concerns in past elections.

Observers further note that sustained public engagement and transparency from INEC will be crucial in addressing misinformation and restoring trust in electoral outcomes. They argue that clear communication before, during, and after elections can help reduce tension and improve acceptance of results.

As preparations continue for upcoming electoral activities, the commission has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that every eligible voter has the opportunity to participate freely and that every vote cast is counted accurately. The assurance by Prof. Amupitan reflects a broader institutional push to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic process and align it with international standards of credibility and fairness.

Ultimately, INEC’s message is centered on rebuilding confidence, enhancing transparency, and reinforcing the principle that in a democracy, every vote matters and every vote must count.
