US President Donald Trump sparked laughter and controversy after joking that he planned to run for a fourth term during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in Washington.
Speaking before journalists at the annual event on Friday, Trump wore a “Trump 2028” cap as he playfully claimed he intended to seek another term in office.
“I’m pleased to announce my intention to run for a fourth term as president of the United States,” he said. “I’m getting really good at running for president. I won three times.”
Despite the remarks, the US Constitution bars Trump from seeking another term. The 22nd Amendment limits presidents to serving a maximum of two terms, meaning his current term is expected to end in January 2029.
The annual dinner, held to celebrate press freedom and journalism, took place three months after the original event was cancelled following a security breach involving an alleged gunman.
Trump used much of his speech to take aim at the media, joking that news organisations would struggle once he leaves office.
“You people have no idea how lucky you are. When I’m gone, you’re all going to be broke. Your business model is going to be finished,” he told the audience.
He also singled out CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins, saying she did not deserve an award and dismissing her reporting as “fake news.” His comments drew a mix of boos and silence from attendees.
The president also poked fun at Wall Street Journal reporter Josh Dawsey, joking about the journalist’s critical coverage before noting that the two greeted each other warmly at the event
Trump later made light of congressional term limits and delivered several other jokes that received a muted response from the audience.
Despite his criticism of the press throughout the speech, he ended on a conciliatory note, saying he had “tremendous respect” for journalists, even though he believes they do not always treat him fairly.
The White House Correspondents’ Association dinner is an annual gathering that brings together political leaders, journalists and media organisations to recognise excellence in journalism and celebrate the role of a free press.
