FG hits back at Emir Sanusi over comments on economic reforms
DDM News

The Federal Government of Nigeria has criticized Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II for his comments regarding the economic reforms introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
According to Diaspora digital media (DDM) coverage at the 2025 Gani Fawehinmi annual lecture, Emir Sanusi, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, publicly expressed his reluctance to assist the Tinubu administration in communicating the positive aspects of its policies and reforms to the public.
In response, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, issued a statement on Thursday morning defending the government’s position.
While recognizing Emir Sanusi’s right to express his views—whether in praise or criticism—Idris found it troubling that someone of his status, particularly from an institution that upholds values such as integrity and fairness, would openly admit to withholding the truth due to personal interests and perceived conflicts.
“It is crucial to emphasize that Nigeria is at a critical moment in history, one where bold, decisive actions are essential to overcoming deep-rooted economic problems,” Idris remarked.
“The administration has embarked on these reforms not because they are easy, but because they are necessary for Nigeria’s long-term stability and growth, a point that Emir Sanusi himself has consistently endorsed in the past.”
Idris further noted that while the country is currently experiencing some temporary difficulties due to these economic decisions, these pains are unavoidable consequences of past mismanagement, a fact which even Emir Sanusi himself has acknowledged before.
“Emir Sanusi understands, perhaps better than most, that these necessary steps are the result of years of poor economic planning,” the minister said.
“The reforms we have put in place are already yielding tangible benefits.
“The unification of exchange rates has helped restore investor confidence, which in turn has strengthened the nation’s foreign reserves, providing Nigeria with greater protection against external economic shocks.”
Idris pointed out that one of the most significant reforms—the removal of the fuel subsidy—has freed up vital resources that are now being directed into key sectors such as infrastructure, education, and healthcare.
Projections from respected bodies, such as the World Bank, show that Nigeria’s GDP is on a clear upward trajectory, signaling that the country is moving toward a period of recovery and growth.
The minister also highlighted the government’s efforts to address fiscal inefficiencies, which have reduced Nigeria’s debt service-to-revenue ratio.
These actions are designed to build a more sustainable financial framework for future generations, providing greater economic security in the long term.
“Despite these significant advances, it is deeply disappointing to see Emir Sanusi, who has long advocated for many of these reforms, now subtly criticize them due to a shift in political loyalty,” Idris remarked.
“His background in economics means he has a unique responsibility to support these reforms rather than undermine them, especially when they are intended to benefit all Nigerians.”
Idris urged Emir Sanusi to prioritize the collective good of Nigerians over any personal or partisan concerns.
“His Highness, as someone with a wealth of knowledge and experience in the economic sector, should use his position to contribute positively, not to hinder progress due to personal differences with those in power,” Idris emphasized.
The minister stressed that Nigeria’s rebuilding process requires unity, focus, and commitment from all sectors of society, including influential leaders like Emir Sanusi.
He called on leaders across the nation to avoid rhetoric that could undermine public trust and instead champion the collective goal of a prosperous and unified Nigeria.
“The time for division is over,” Idris declared.
“This is a pivotal moment in our nation’s history, and what Nigeria needs now is cooperation, not distractions.
The government is focused on delivering results, and we urge all stakeholders, including esteemed leaders such as Emir Sanusi, to support these efforts.”
Idris also reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration’s resolve to lead Nigeria towards a future of economic inclusivity, sustainability, and shared prosperity.
He highlighted that overcoming the current challenges requires courage, focus, and collective action, not divisive narratives that can hinder progress.
“The administration remains open to dialogue with all well-meaning stakeholders,” Idris concluded,
“but we are unwavering in our commitment to placing the interests of Nigerians above all else.”
The minister’s statement also underscored that Emir Sanusi, with his experience and expertise in economics, could play an important role in advancing the government’s reform agenda.
“As a former central banker, Emir Sanusi understands better than most the structural changes needed to ensure long-term economic stability,” Idris said.
“It would be a great benefit to the country if he were to leverage his knowledge to support these reforms rather than criticize them from the sidelines.”
Furthermore, Idris emphasized that history would judge this moment, and the actions of leaders like Emir Sanusi will play a crucial part in shaping Nigeria’s future.
“Leaders must choose to prioritize the nation’s destiny over personal ambitions,” he stated.
“Together, we can deliver on the promise of a better Nigeria, where economic progress benefits all.”
Idris’s call for unity and constructive collaboration was clear, urging Emir Sanusi and other influential figures in the country to play a positive role in Nigeria’s recovery.
He acknowledged that while challenges remain, the government’s efforts are already producing tangible outcomes that will ultimately lead to a stronger, more sustainable economy for future generations.
The Federal Government’s defense of its economic policies and reforms has been clear, with Idris reminding Nigerians that the pain caused by necessary reforms is temporary and that the long-term benefits will far outweigh the short-term difficulties.
He called on Emir Sanusi to focus on the collective good, set aside personal grievances, and contribute to the common goal of rebuilding Nigeria.
In conclusion, the minister reiterated that this is a crucial time for the country, and all leaders, including Emir Sanusi, must rise above personal or partisan concerns to work together for the greater good.
“Together, we can overcome the challenges ahead and build a prosperous, sustainable future for Nigeria,” he concluded.
