FG’s 24 hours healthcare in Nasarawa: A pipe dream or genuine breakthrough?

The Federal Government, in collaboration with the World Bank, has commenced the revitalisation of 58 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) in Nasarawa State.
The Executive Secretary of the Nasarawa State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Usman Iskilu-Saleh, disclosed this on Wednesday in Lafia.
He disclosed this while hosting members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists.
Furthermore he said the centres would operate round the clock to ensure uninterrupted healthcare services for residents.
According to Iskilu-Saleh, the government had initially planned to upgrade one PHC in each of the state’s 147 electoral wards.
But decided to start with 58 and the project is expected to be completed by June 2025.
“The Nigerian government is committed to revitalising healthcare facilities across all 147 electoral wards before the end of 2025.
“For now, 58 centres are being upgraded, and they will be completed by June,” he said.
He explained that the facilities would operate 24 hours daily without closure.
The Executive Secretary assured that the remaining centres across the 13 Local Government Areas of the state would also be revitalised before the end of next year.
He commended Governor Abdullahi Sule for his support in strengthening the state’s healthcare system and providing quality service delivery.
Iskilu-Saleh also appreciated the Correspondents’ Chapel for their visit and pledged to work closely with journalists.
He urged them to organise medical outreach programmes for residents while assuring them of the agency’s support.
Earlier, the Chairman of the NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel in Nasarawa, Isaac Ukpoju, said the visit was to congratulate the Executive Secretary on his appointment.
“We are here to commend you on your appointment. Your track record speaks for itself,” Ukpoju said.
He assured the agency of the chapel’s readiness to publicise its activities across the state.
Moreover, with the ongoing revitalisation, residents of Nasarawa State are expected to benefit from improved access to healthcare services.
