Nigeria’s Flamingos have once again demonstrated why they remain one of Africa’s strongest youth football teams after sealing qualification for the 2026 FIFA U 17 Women’s World Cup with an exciting 5 to 3 victory over Benin Republic.

The young Nigerian side delivered another attacking masterclass to complete an 8 to 5 aggregate triumph over their West African neighbours, earning one of Africa’s qualification tickets to the global tournament scheduled to take place in Morocco later this year.

Having taken a slender 3 to 2 advantage from the first leg in Ikenne, Ogun State, the Flamingos arrived for the return fixture knowing another disciplined performance would be enough to keep their World Cup dream alive. Instead of sitting back to protect their lead, the Nigerian girls adopted an aggressive approach from the opening whistle and quickly took control of the contest.

The breakthrough arrived in the sixth minute when Mary Akpan Dunstan finished confidently after a swift attacking move that exposed the Benin defence. The early goal immediately settled the Nigerian players and forced Benin to abandon any cautious approach.

The Flamingos continued to dominate possession with quick passing, intelligent movement and relentless pressing. Their efforts produced a second goal in the 14th minute as Esther Enen Stephen calmly slotted home after receiving a well weighted pass inside the penalty area.

With a two goal advantage on the day and a commanding lead on aggregate, Nigeria appeared to be cruising toward qualification. However, Benin showed remarkable determination and responded before the halftime interval with a well worked goal that reignited hopes of a comeback.

The second half developed into an entertaining contest as both teams attacked with confidence. Nigeria restored their two goal cushion through Chisom Nwachukwu, whose clinical finish rewarded another flowing move involving several teammates.

Benin refused to surrender and once again reduced the deficit with a determined attacking display. Their willingness to continue pushing forward created an open match filled with chances at both ends of the pitch.

The Flamingos responded in impressive fashion when Harmony Chidi added Nigeria’s fourth goal with an excellent finish inside the penalty area after capitalising on a defensive mistake.

As the match entered its closing stages, Benin scored again to make the scoreline 4 to 3, but any hopes of a dramatic comeback were ended when substitute Aishat Animashaun completed the scoring with a composed finish from a fast counterattack, sealing a deserved 5 to 3 victory.

The final whistle sparked celebrations among the players and coaching staff, who embraced on the pitch after confirming another successful qualification campaign.

Head coach Bankole Olowookere praised his players for maintaining their attacking philosophy throughout both legs despite carrying a first leg advantage into the decisive encounter. The coach noted that the team’s confidence, discipline and determination were key factors behind the impressive performance.

Nigeria’s qualification extends the country’s outstanding record in the FIFA U 17 Women’s World Cup. Since the tournament was introduced, the Flamingos have become regular participants and one of Africa’s most successful representatives.

The team’s greatest achievement came at the 2022 edition in India, where the Flamingos made history by winning the bronze medal after defeating Germany in the third place playoff. That remarkable success marked the first time a Nigerian women’s team had claimed a medal at a FIFA tournament and inspired a new generation of young female footballers across the country.

Many of the players currently representing the Flamingos dream of following in the footsteps of former stars who progressed through the youth ranks before establishing themselves with the Falconets and eventually the Super Falcons.

The latest qualification also reflects the continued growth of women’s football in Nigeria. Increased investment in youth competitions, grassroots programmes and coaching development has helped produce talented young players capable of competing with the best teams in Africa.

Football experts believe the current Flamingos squad possesses a balanced blend of technical quality, pace, creativity and tactical discipline. Throughout the qualifying series against Benin, the team displayed confidence in possession, effective pressing and an ability to respond positively whenever their opponents threatened to fight back.

The 2026 FIFA U 17 Women’s World Cup will feature an expanded format, providing young players with an even greater opportunity to showcase their talents on the international stage. Morocco will host the competition, offering African teams the added motivation of competing on home soil.

Preparations for the tournament are expected to begin immediately, with the Nigeria Football Federation likely to organise training camps and international friendly matches to ensure the team is fully prepared before travelling to Morocco.

Supporters across the country have welcomed the qualification with optimism, believing the Flamingos possess the quality to challenge for honours once again. The team’s exciting style of football, combined with the experience gained during the qualification campaign, has strengthened confidence that Nigeria can improve on previous performances.

For the players, qualifying for the World Cup represents the reward for months of hard work, sacrifice and commitment. For Nigerian football, it is another reminder of the country’s remarkable ability to produce gifted young talent capable of competing at the highest level.

With their World Cup ticket now secured, the Flamingos will shift their attention toward preparing for the biggest challenge of their young careers. Carrying the hopes of millions of Nigerians, they will head to Morocco determined to continue the country’s proud tradition in women’s football and perhaps write another memorable chapter in the history of the beautiful game.
