Security operatives have arrested four suspected bandits within the vicinity of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) facility at Akure Airport in Ondo State following a coordinated operation involving multiple security agencies.

The arrests were confirmed in an official press release issued on March 15, 2026 by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, which disclosed that the suspects were apprehended after suspicious movements were detected near the airport perimeter.

According to the statement signed by Henry Agbebire, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at FAAN, the suspects were intercepted after a distress alert was raised about unidentified individuals moving suspiciously close to the airport’s security boundary.

DDM News gathered that the alert originated from observations of suspicious activity behind the airport perimeter fence in the direction of the nearby Eleyeowo community. Security officials quickly treated the situation as a potential threat to the safety of the airport and immediately mobilized security personnel to investigate the development.

Following the alert, a joint security operation was launched involving FAAN’s Aviation Security Department as well as several national security agencies. Among those involved in the operation were personnel from the Nigerian Air Force, the Nigerian Army, and the Nigeria Police Force.

Local security outfits also joined the operation, including members of the Amotekun Corps alongside community vigilante groups familiar with the terrain surrounding the airport.

Security officials said that during the operation, several individuals attempted to flee the area when they noticed the approach of the joint security team. The attempt to escape immediately heightened suspicion among the security personnel, who moved swiftly to pursue and apprehend the suspects.

After a coordinated chase, four individuals were successfully captured by the security forces. Authorities confirmed that the suspects were subsequently handed over to the appropriate command of the Nigeria Police Force for further interrogation and investigation.

Although the exact mission or intentions of the suspects have not yet been officially confirmed, security experts say the presence of armed bandits or suspicious individuals near an airport facility is treated as a serious security concern due to the potential risks it poses to aviation operations.

DDM News understands that aviation authorities worldwide treat unauthorized access or suspicious movement around airport perimeters as a critical security threat because such activities can endanger aircraft operations, passengers, and airport infrastructure.

In the press statement, FAAN commended the swift collaboration among the different security agencies that participated in the operation. The agency noted that the successful arrests were made possible through coordinated intelligence sharing and rapid deployment of security personnel.

FAAN specifically praised the role played by aviation security officers, military personnel, police operatives, and local security groups, whose collective efforts helped prevent what could have potentially developed into a serious security incident.

The aviation authority also used the opportunity to emphasize the importance of strengthening perimeter protection at airports across Nigeria. Officials explained that the incident highlights the need for enhanced security infrastructure to prevent unauthorized access to sensitive aviation facilities.

In response to such security concerns, the Federal Government has reportedly begun implementing measures aimed at improving airport safety nationwide. These measures include the installation of modern perimeter fencing systems as well as the upgrading of surveillance and security monitoring equipment.

According to FAAN, the ongoing security improvement initiative is being implemented through the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development with the support of the presidency under the leadership of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Authorities say the project is intended to reinforce security barriers around airports and ensure that unauthorized persons cannot gain access to restricted areas that could compromise aviation safety.

DDM News gathered that work on the new security upgrades has already commenced in phases at several airport locations across the country. The objective of the initiative is to ensure that airports under FAAN’s management are better protected against criminal activities such as illegal entry, sabotage, and other potential threats.

Security analysts note that airports are considered critical national infrastructure and therefore require constant monitoring and protection. Any attempt by criminal groups to operate near airport environments is treated with urgency because of the possible implications for national security and public safety.

The arrests near Akure Airport therefore represent a significant success for the joint security team involved in the operation. Authorities believe that early detection and rapid response helped prevent the situation from escalating into a larger security challenge.

While investigations continue, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has reassured travelers, airport staff, and surrounding communities that security remains a top priority at all airports under its management.

FAAN emphasized that it remains fully committed to maintaining the safety of passengers, airline operators, and airport personnel nationwide. The agency also encouraged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities around airports or other critical infrastructure.

As investigations proceed, security agencies are expected to determine whether the suspects were acting independently or as part of a broader criminal network operating in the region.

For now, the successful arrest of the four suspects serves as a reminder of the importance of strong cooperation among security agencies in protecting Nigeria’s aviation sector and ensuring that airports remain safe for travelers and aviation operations across the country.
