Ghana fires coach Hughton after AFCON exit
Ghana has sacked its coach, Chris Hughton, after the team’s failure to progress beyond the group stage of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced the decision on Monday, citing the team’s poor performance and lack of progress as the reasons for Hughton’s dismissal.
Hughton, who took over as coach in November 2023, was tasked with leading Ghana to the AFCON title, but the team’s performance in the tournament was disappointing.
Ghana finished third in their group, behind Senegal and Gambia, and failed to qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament.
The GFA expressed its disappointment with the team’s performance and stated that Hughton’s dismissal was necessary to ensure that the team makes progress in future tournaments.
The GFA also thanked Hughton for his service and wished him well in his future endeavors.
Hughton’s dismissal has sparked a debate about the state of Ghanaian football and the need for reforms to improve the national team’s performance.
Many football fans and experts have criticized the GFA for its handling of the national team and have called for a more transparent and accountable system.
The GFA has promised to take steps to improve the national team’s performance and has stated that it will appoint a new coach soon.
The new coach will be tasked with leading Ghana to the 2026 World Cup and the 2025 AFCON tournament.
The GFA’s decision has sparked a debate about the state of Ghanaian football and the need for reforms to improve the national team’s performance.
It remains to be seen who will be appointed as the new coach and what steps will be taken to improve the national team’s performance.
