ABUJA, NIGERIA — Former Head of State Yakubu Gowon has urged Nigeria’s political class to abandon what he described as a “do-or-die” mentality in politics, warning that excessive desperation for power undermines national unity, stability, and democratic growth.

Gowon made the remarks during a public book launch event held in Abuja, where political leaders, military figures, diplomats, and other stakeholders gathered to reflect on Nigeria’s political evolution and nation-building journey.

He cautioned that elections should not be treated as a matter of life and death, stressing that healthy political competition must be guided by respect, tolerance, and commitment to national interest.

The former Head of State noted that the survival of Nigeria’s democracy depends on the ability of political actors to prioritize peace over personal ambition.

He explained that political tensions often escalate when contestants adopt extreme approaches to elections, leading to mistrust, division, and post-election conflicts.

Gowon emphasized that Nigeria’s democratic system requires continuous refinement to ensure that political competition remains peaceful and constructive.

He also referenced past experiences in the country’s political history, urging current leaders to learn from earlier challenges that threatened national cohesion.

Participants at the event reportedly welcomed his remarks, describing them as timely given the increasing political activities ahead of future elections.

Observers note that concerns about political intolerance and electoral violence have remained recurring issues in Nigeria’s democratic process.

Analysts say that statements from elder statesmen like Gowon often carry significant moral weight, especially in periods of heightened political tension.

The book launch also served as a platform for broader discussions on governance, leadership values, and the importance of democratic stability in Nigeria.

Political commentators argue that reducing political extremism could help strengthen institutions and improve public confidence in the electoral system.

As preparations gradually build toward future elections, attention remains focused on how political actors will respond to renewed calls for peaceful and issue-based campaigns.
