The Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Benue State, Ardo Risku Muhammad, has been killed by suspected gunmen in Otukpo Local Government Area of the state.
Muhammad was reportedly attacked on Friday afternoon alongside his associate, Yakubu Isah, while returning from a peace and security meeting held in neighbouring Ohimini Local Government Area.
The incident occurred around the Okudu community at about 2 p.m., according to sources familiar with the development.
The victims were said to have attended a meeting organised by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Idekpa, Ohimini, aimed at addressing security concerns in the area.
However, while travelling back, their vehicle reportedly came under attack from armed youths who opened fire, killing both men.
Confirming the incident, the deceased’s son, Idris Muhammad, said his father and Isah were attacked shortly after leaving the meeting.
“They killed my father, the Ardo, and his associate, Yakubu Isah, while they were returning from the peace meeting called by the DPO in Ohimini. We have recovered their bodies and taken them to Oyangede for burial,” he said.
The killings have sparked anxiety in the area, with residents fearing a possible escalation of tensions.
Chairman of Otukpo Local Government Area, Maxwell Ogiri, confirmed the attack and described the situation around the community as tense. He, however, appealed for calm, assuring residents that security agencies had taken charge of the situation.
“The area is tense at the moment, but I want to urge everyone to remain calm. The police are already handling the matter,” he said.
The Chairman of Ohimini Local Government Area, Gabriel Adole, also confirmed the incident. He noted that the late MACBAN chairman had participated in what he described as a successful peace meeting before the attack occurred.
Adole condemned the killings and expressed confidence that security agencies would investigate the matter and bring those responsible to justice.
The Benue State Police Command also confirmed the incident. Police spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, said an investigation had commenced and assured that efforts were underway to track down the perpetrators.
She urged residents to remain peaceful and cooperate with security agencies as investigations continue.
